I would recommend not giving up on Den's list and avoid using rac's and lurms until you get better or have a solid team to play with. His list is what most of the top guys go by and it is worth the pain and learning curve woes to be an effective player in cw. Also maybe ask an experienced player about skill tree cause you can screw mechs up if you don't fully appreciate the maze.

I had decent results in the Night Gyr and Sun Spider (more in the Night Gyr) but that Black Widow has given me nothing but grief, mainly due the jams.

Four Dragon 5Ns; works at any range on any map.

As mentioned earlier there is no such thing as a GOOD GENERIC IS DROP DECK, it depends mostly on map but also mode

3 x GHP-5H or WHM-6D/6R Laser of Gauss/Laser is workable on every map bar long range. There is no map those builds are objectively bad on at all and leaves tonnage to spare for last drop and a reasonable selection at that.

definitely check out grimmechs as well if you haven't already. it's a more comprehensive collection of builds from a number of players who know their stuff.

I can second that. I tried out their recommendation for a dual gauss Vapor Eagle and it worked a treat.

By the same token, some of the builds on GrimMechs are meant to be played a very specific way in a narrow set of conditions, so don't expect a build to be generically amazing. Play it at the ranges they recommend and know how to work with the inherent drawbacks (e.g. 4x ERPPC VGL is really hot and kinda slow, but packs a punch).
