PGI has always ****** up MWO in many many many many ways. What about you give us a turn? L4D2, Skyrim, Fallout, these titles are alive for so long because the community is capable of modding it so much. Maybe, just maybe, it will breathe new life in MWO.
Imagine Thomas the Tank Engine replacing Dire-Wolf? What if people could mod Elementals, or Super Heavies?
Balance was handled by XML files, what if we had our own custom XML files that we could use with custom games? Custom Balance. We could test our own guesses for balance.
Add in the poor AI that you had, at least as PVE, then boom, MWO would have a bit more life.

This seems totally impractical given MWO's structure. If they allow mods on existing servers, then cheating will become a huge, unstoppable thing.
If they allow mods in private lobbies, it will draw players away from the public queues and accelerate the death spiral.

Don't expect AI. But they could have used a lobby system instead of QP/GP/FP/Solaris buckets.
If they let players host games we could have had community run events using rules, or "mutators" as Unreal calls them.
The host could add their own rules like mech/weapon/map/mode/tonnage bans, stock mode, IS only, Number of mechs per side. Proper ELO sorting. Mech Quirk tweaks for community sourced balancing or just fun (PPC instagib mode FTW). It could even have gotten crazy like having a respawn counter or best of three with/without team re-sorting.
As a lobby system you can see who is playing what and join them, send invites, control sorting. etc.etc.etc.
No forever waiting in an empty bucket before getting matched to a T6 first timer since you can see what you're getting into beforehand.
PGI would need to run their own modes with their best attempts at generalised cross-tier balance as a baseline. Then maybe some top level players that understand the game from a T1 angle can have a re balanced config file to pass around town. Maybe that could have been used in the Championships too provided its locked down beforehand.
Dreaming at this point though.

I'd rather see player hosted servers.

This is exactly what MW5 will be. Full mod support and full mod tools directly out of the gate. They've even given the MWLL guys their blessing to port it over to MW5 in one of the AMAs.
