If I understood it correctly, the guy wants to host a server for MWO to be played upon.
But honestly, this game is going to die either way. It's not the support of the dev, but mostly the support of the community that is being lost.

i don't think it would be possible as all the art assets (mechs and others), weapons mechanics, are PGI's treasure that they can reuse between games.
And i don't speak only for MW5.
i wonder if they share things with HBS ?

im pretty sure PGI is perfectly capable of putting the game into maintenance mode themselves.
all they have to do is stop new development, reduce the cost of running the game as much as possible, and just pay for the servers really. im sure they would still earn enough on mechpacks to still pay for the servers for a while.
and obviously its critical that MW5 does well enough that they can develop MWO2.
