Two suggestions to help New Players get better knowledge and immersion in MWO:
  • Define roles that different mechs tend to perform on the battlefield to help new players learn the vernacular of the game. MWO does not really have a "role" system other than weight classes, but there is clearly a difference between the roles of the ADR-CN and the FLE-20, or between the CPLT-2 and the NTG-H.
  • Provide blurbs on each chasi explaining which role(s) it tends to perform best (as a graphic would be great) and some lore related to the mech. This way the player has a better idea of what the mech is designed to be "good at" at a glance, why it was made, etc.
Thoughts on this from other folks? What would the roles be, if we were trying to define a list?

Role depends on the build and chassis, not just the chassis. You can build a Catapult A1 as an SRM boat or LRM boat and they'd have completely different roles in the game.

Especially with omnimechs, there's no way PGI's going to know what build you're going to put on there, so identifying a role is futile or counterproductive.

Some mechs in lore are jack-of-all-trades, so there's no basis for PGI to determine what it should be doing in MWO where it probably will be built for a specific playstyle.
