In other words why take Assault as a forward mech when you can just sit at the back and snipe ?

Well, assaults usually aren't tanks in MWO outside of a specific few like the Anni. The true role of the class is raw unbridled firepower.

I agree, this has been something i've desired for a while now. I think it should be part of your core stats, and should be shown on the EOM screen as well, as an individual value, and for the whole team.
If you could see it for your own personal stats, It would show you how well your twist and spread game is, and would give you a numbers based approach to measuring improvement.
If you could see the total armour and structure remaining for both teams at the end of a match, I think it would give a really good indication of how close the fight actually was, as opposed to the end match result. I've been a part of 12-4 victories that have appeared one sided, but in reality were a lot closer, with no mech on the victor's side over 50%. Would maybe stop curb some of the complaints about the matchmaker.

But... sometimes it's neccessary, and in the land of QP shenanigans, not only is there no reward for it - you're instead actively punished for it by carking it early or losing your fight potential with open or critted components.
I've been on the frontline of numerous matches where I'm with another assault or two, doing my best to dissuade the enemy from pushing, eating strikes and frantically trying to preserve open sections of my poor mech, while 3 other assaults stand off 2 gridsquares away with LRM's and Gauss and ERLL's and AC2's and way-out-of-optimum-range-ERMLs while 4 of our lights harass a lone wolfhound on the enemy team while Piranhas nibble holes in us. Same goes for those poor slow ******** left behind in NASCAR that realize they can't run when their rear armour evaporates, and they decide to stall the enemy advance as long as possible to give the tip of our own spear something to poke holes in (or at least to get over 300dmg on the EOM screen).
I know there isn't much sharing in the pug queues, but sometimes sharing armour is required for a win.

If you had only Assaults , mediums and lights , Yes Assaults should stand in front and brawl .

To keep dat advantage in play u have to live not tank
Otherwise assault mech advantage is lost
Doh I do agree sometime you have to choose the lesser bad thing to make up for bad discussions
And take some hits doh I much prefer to draw fire with out hits as it achieves the same thing (salty angry enemies who miss coz their salty angry and some wot less competent coz ur making them salty an angry)
why gg close was somw wot effective
untill people reralised when enemy make u angry they win
