I was in a match where someone mentioned a fix to the crash to desktop bug that seems to happen at somewhat random times. It was suggested to run the game in "full window" mode rather than "full screen".
I had never really considered this before as it would seem to wax an wane with certain game updates, but I haven't had a crash in weeks. I just thought that I'd try to help someone else avoid these annoying crashes and say thanks to whoever it was that suggested it in chat.

Not Sure Who To Thank...

Yep. The full window mode is hands down one of the best general fixes to mitigate MWO crashes. Especially since a lot of the player base is often alt-tabbed whilst waiting 5+ minutes for a game.

Maybe it was me, TVMA ? I seem to recall mentioning that I'd discovered it myself some weeks back - in a game a while ago ...hmmm... yeah, your name is sorta familiar :-)
it's amazing what a difference it makes. Now the only time I 'crash' is when it just disconnects you from server and you get tossed back to the MechLab and have to come back in again (or try to, lol)

- so, to whatever extent it was helpful to you (or others), I am happy to have helped ! *if it was me

I run every thing in full window mode now. Can't see a downside, everything is more stable and works great with frequent alt tabbing.
With MWO I went from a crash every 5 games to about 1 every 200.

About 2 weeks ago I was crashing like almost every game, and I always run in full window mode. Reported to PGI and sent them a bunch of info, then they sent me an email asking for the same info I've already sent them. I fixed the problem myself by going to my BIOS setup and re-tune my memory clocks. Haven't had a crash since.

This is what (full) windowed mode is designed for:
Full screen is designed to eek out every ounce of performance by giving the application sole access to the display output. The downside being when you tab-out the OS has to switch renderers, which as you've noticed, can cause instability and crashes.
Windowed mode is designed for those who are looking to multi-task, the caveat being the application has to render through the display manager before being outputted to the display, which can cost a few FPS.
