Just curious to know but when I started playing MWO I downloaded directly from website and not from Steam. My question is does it make any difference at all? For instance is there better connection to servers either way? .... I suspect Steam offers better tracking and display of statistical data of players playing at any giving moment and such ... not sure if I can view that info via normal website download and launcher portal. Anyway was just curious.

Oh and just for curiosity’s sake can someone who downloaded the game/client via website also log in through Steam if they do have a Steam account but didn’t originally install game via Steam?

I've used both. Steam for me happens to have less problems with patching, keeping connection and tracking hours played since you started a session. Steam also has all of your other games and mods so it's faster to start another game when bored of mwo.

FWIW, you don't need steam running to launch MWO.

Thanks for info ... installed and been playing via website and haven’t had any real problems with patching and such. Just wanted to see if it has better connection as in less crashing in middle of match instances. It happens at times albeit rarely. Tracking some statistical stuff like how many online is a plus I guess.

If I did want to play via Steam for whatever reason I assume I would have to re-download game via there service so it’s recognized by Steam client through their folders right?

You can probably just copy your install to wherever steam is trying to install it.

What changes:
  • Downloading patches and their installation is faster on Steam
  • You can't pre-download patches and apply them from an external source the way you can with PGI's Portal
  • You can't play on a PTS using Steam, you need Portal for that
  • With the Steam version, if you have Steam Overlay enabled you can buy MC using Steam Wallet.
  • Other than those, both versions are functionally identical

Absolutely yes, I had my account before the game launched on Steam.

The account system is tied to mwomercs.com, not to a specific client. You can switch between Portal and Steam at will.
