... it's still a solid and enjoyable game.

Played a round of the original board game in what must have been my first game of Battletech in perhaps 20 years.
Ended up being a 2v3 as we lost a player before hand.
2x Marauder MAD-3R
vs
1x Centurion CN9-AH
1x Enforcer ENF-4R
1x Trebuchet TBT-5N

Ended up coming right down to the wire with the Trebuchet squaring off against a Marauder both heavily damaged.

Considering the other players at the table had also not played in 20 years and we had 2 new players, the rules showed they are pretty easy to pickup and get stuck into a game without much delay.

Good fun.

unless you start second guessing every movement and "force" fast movement game can be quick - with a "play-aid" like a pivot chart you even don't have to calculate the to hit numbers.... again it gets faster.

About the game - the MAD-3R is an incredible example for simple to break hard to kill. Once I destroyed a side torso of a MAD-3R and thought ok thats it. Less then 50% of its firepower remaining... but a single PPC that can be fired without worry of overheat is a terrible foe.

Especially with those slow mediums and medium armored (Treb, Centurion) the PPC is pure horror.

There was a bit of thought and team planning (scheming) with each round and it literally came down to a fight between one of the MAD-3Rs missing a torso and badly damaged trying to kick the TBT-5N to death which was on one leg, out of LRM ammo and trying to blaze away with the medium lasers.
The random hit locations favoured the MAD-3R but it was oh so close.

Once you get the hang of how to work out the targeting numbers it goes pretty quickly.
We kept it to 3025 tech so didn't have some of the additional rules and equipment to worry about and it was interesting to see how close it was just going off mech tonnage to build the two teams.

Can see that having the minis and 3D terrain would be really appealing visually.
As it was, the old fold out maps and cardboard stand mechs did a pretty good job.
