Interesting Website Change...

It is somewhat akin to looking at the shelves in the grocery store via webcam alongside a webcam of the shelves in your kitchen, I guess.
And no, I don't think I wanna buy a mechpack right now. ;-)

Interesting stat from that page. 817 variants of mechs. That a lot of work from PGI over the years.

What is the point of having this near the games end?

Perhaps it might have been more useful earlier on... yes, it would have, I think. I still haven't seen how my phone screen will handle it, but hey, it is more informative than the previous bit, which persisted for how many years?

It makes sense to me to have this change introduced when you introduce buying gsp for money, BUT it seems like it would have been good to introduce it earlier in the game's life.

The main reasons why I don't get new mechs is I already have the others able to do similar or better builds plus I don't have much interest in other mechs. Now if a new mech added a new mechanic that only that mech could do without super-god-level quirks which we all know would be nerf-nuked on c-bill release is if the mech added something like urbie's 360 torso twist, cyclops' sensor range aoe for allied mechs etc.
When I see assaults or heavies with some weird quirky 1-2 ballistic slots and a wimpy mg rof of 10-20% I just go nope and wtf at the same time. If the only difference between variants is less hard points and a few quirks that becomes a pass.

Neat.
Also means to own everything, need 817 mechbays.

No way I would ever have 817 mechbays... in fact, the only weight class I only own at least one variant of each (save for the Dervish, which isn't out for MC or C-Bills for a bit) is mediums. I feel like having over 100 mechs is a bit excessive for me, anyway... still, not gonna sell the 'mistakes' like the EXE's and VND's.

This. So much this.
I used to continuously cycle through each and everyone of my mechs, all 228, with a slight emphasis toward my Quickdraws and Cataphracts for nostalgia reasons. But now-a-days? I pretty much run the same dozen or so mechs and nothing else (and I only run that many because of tonnage fluctuations in GQ).

I have 140 now, and have almost doubled my ownership in the past year, as I finally purchased two Ultimate packs, as well as taken advantage of the ten for $$ sale PGI put on last year. Although I am strictly potatoville, I cycle through (and track) a different twenty or fewer chassis, some from each weight class, each and every month. It keeps it interesting for me, and lets me remember why I bought (or don't play) certain mechs.
For nostalgia's sake, let's just say I was probably one of the few that was overjoyed when they released the RFL-IIC!

Surprisingly I waited until after the new skill tree to do this. Even then it wasn't really until o decided I wanted more mechs during the 50%off plus my mw5 mc that I was like.... I really don't need more than one of each really except for those with unique hardpoints.
But it was around the same time I realized I didn't need normal variants to use patterns....which was really the only reason I didn't do it back in 2015
