The Tournament is happening, it's on the news page, but it's run by the players this year instead of PGI. But it is an official thing that PGI is involved with and will use the Comp Queue just like the last two years.

Let me re-phrase, PGI is not running a Tournament this year. Therefore why would the sell packs to make money from a player run thing.

Because PGI is in support of it, has provided a bunch of prizes and participation awards for people who enter.
If they were to do a supporter pack, it'd probably have some decent stuff that even people not interested in comp would still like. PGI would also probably make a few bucks themselves. So it is a great idea.

they can still announce it and later say it will be Epic Games exclusive tournament and will only be available next year

@pgi - put some effort into this game, and I buy stuff. do what you're doing, and see a closed wallet.
running around in circles gets old - even in this franchise which I love.

Bingo. I've bought tournament supporter packs just because I like warhorns and bonus cbills are great for my alt. And it's a way to keep revenue coming in, even if half of it is designated for tournament support.
There's just no good reason not to put a little package together and I hope that can spare the talent to make it happen.

Because unless I'm very wrong about this PGI is still providing part of the prizes and a Tournament Supporter Pack could go towards increasing the prize pool.

PGI advised us that wasn't an option this year for us to then add that to the prize pool as well.
Unfortunate for sure as the TSP was always good value.
It what it is and thus we are trying to raise funds ourselves HERE by offering up services and other incentives for people. While not in-game stuff specifically, some of it is pretty cool.
We're also running a PILE of giveaways on the streams and what not... I have some 15-20 worth of MC/Mechbay codes to give away for the EU Invitational that starts in ~20hrs or so. We go live HERE

Still PGI could have put zero effort in by rounding up all the previous MWOWC war horns and some of the other existing goodies, put in a bundle and shell it out to the people.
Zero dev costs and could offer quite the bang for the buck at 20 bucks.
The donations part is cool but it is really dependent on a smaller part of our community and having a bit more reach into the people would have great and I think helpful.

So not really zero dev costs, I think that's an incorrect statement to make. There is definately costing associated there in making it and administration of it.
I mean it does suck from the player/organiser point of view but I can understand it from the PGI at the same time. Is what it is.
