Newish player here, (to mwo not to mechwarrior/battletech as a whole) and I want a dual Heavy Gauss 'Mech but I'm not sure which 'Mech or even which variant would be best. If someone could tell me what the advantages of each are, or which is generically better, that would be appreciated.

Depends on what you would like to have
The ability to run all the dakka and then some - Annie 2A
The ability to run ECM and 4 lb10 or HG plus some other builds - Faf 5

I would recommend the Fafnir 5. 4 Ballistic Hardpoints and 3 Energy and the possibility for Ecm. Also the Fafnir is a Little bit faster then the Annihilator.

Please be Aware that both mechs are slow and with the current Nascar-meta the Team will leave you behind, at least in Quick-Play.

If you are building an annihilator for double gauss, ANH-1X variant is better than 2A, cos you also get 6x mpl on board. 2A is better for all other ballistic builds.

With fafnir 5B you get ecm and 5 mpls. Ecm might hide you from qp potato tornado if you get left out of the nascar loop. That mech is so big though that people must be blind not to see it.

I also like mauler (MAL-2P) with 6x erml for its added range. Its smaller and dies easier than anni or faf, but looks badass doing it.

Neither. Use the Victor 9a1 or a Cyclops Sleipnir.

Annhilator is a lot better for Gauss game. You can get a bunch of MPLs to supplement your gauss alpha at appropriate range and it has better hit-boxes for brawling than Fafnir by a long shot.

There's a fine point on this thread about Sleipnir and Victor 9a1, they both do 2xHGauss very well but in different manner to Annihilator and Fafnir, where the 100 toners rely on armor and huge precise alpha (ANH-1X is king here) those two lack a bit of armor but are lot more manoeuvrable. Honestly my favourite 2xHGauss is Sleipnir but Anni and Victor have both their place.

thats what fp is for. assaults play very well there. unless you save them for last wave, which is a really noob thing to do. you are walking a 100 ton mech into what is essentially a 12 man wolf pack.
