Thats weird...I found piloting a mech in Mech 5 more like what it feels like to pilot a mech. I was a founder way back for MWO and it devolved IMO to a flat twitch arcade experience. Mech 5 is much more satisfying when it comes mech piloting. So far I love it and I cant wait to work with the editor.

The MWO mech lab has the side effect of making many mech variants virtually identical because you can customize almost everything in them. Engines, armor, and you can even swap in and out ferro and Endo. This makes more mech variants viable in PvP, but makes many mechs redundant, other than hitboxes or weapon placement being slightly better or worse.

MW5 makes mech variants and multiple chassis of the same weight have a wider spread of capability specifically because you can’t change everything. Your engine is locked, your type of armor and structure are locked, and even your max armor is set by more than just your weight class. This limits how much you can customize any given mech, but it makes multiple mech variants or multiple mechs of the same weight feel like they are much more varied than they do in MWO. So, you end up looking for better mechs or variants more than you try to optimize what you have, but in the end you can still build just about whatever sort of mech you want. I wouldn’t call this design better or worse, just different.

I think MW5 could use more chassis and variants because of the mech lab limitations, but the inability to swap engines hasn’t really restricted me much. I’ve had more problems with the hard point sizes on mechs under 60T limiting me than I have the fixed engine. Maybe that is just a difference in how we play? The fact that I couldn’t mount an AC20 on anything until I found a Hunchback 4G annoyed me more than anything. Well, that and the LRM20 rack I had sitting around waiting to find something with a large missile slot!

i actually like the hardpoints for MechWarrior 5 and I also like the fact that the lowtech of the Inner Sphere does not have the ability to have a Merc Commander to change engines on a mech. I believe this is more to what the lore has intended than have any ole' person change the engine size on a mech and then have every heavy mech travel 64 kph and with the same weapon load outs.

Not all Ballistic mechs should be able to fit an AC/20. You think a Catapult K2 was design to have two Gauss or two AC20s on the side torso, for instance? You think a Firestarter was designed to put an AC20 or AC10 on it?

I assume the original post was about how to change engines, which you cannot do in MechWarrior 5.

I don’t disagree. It’s just frustrating early on that so few mechs are in the game that can mount an AC20. I’m pretty sure there are only two mechs in the game under 80 tons that can mount a large ballistic: the Hunchback and the Urbanmech R60L. And if we are being realistic, the Urbanmech is a joke build that has so little armor and ammo when mounting the 20 that you would never actually use it. So, other than assault mechs, there is one option for a large ballistic, unless I’ve missed a chassis with a large ballistic slot. Maybe a hero or something?

Large missile hard points are a little easier to find, but are still pretty rare on anything smaller than a catapult. Missiles are less of a problem though because mounting two LRM10s instead of one LRM20 uses the same tonnage, has the same range, and puts out very close to the same damage and heat. Two AC10s are not nearly as similar to one AC20.

i can’t tell if this was a conscious choice, trying to keep large ballistic and missile hardpoints mostly on assault mechs, or if it is just random based on which mechs they put in. Either way, the restrictions on large ballistics in particular has caused me more frustration than fixed engines.

Large ballistic... two versions of the centurion come with AC/20s.

Ahh, the -AH cent. I forgot about that one! Putting them on heros makes sense. I haven’t seen the Wang or the GI yet. Guess I just haven’t been seeing the right variants!

I’m curious, what heavies can mount large ballistics? Obviously the currently mounted weapon isn’t a good indicator of mount size.
