To be exact: Microsoft is the owner of the "MechWarrior / MechCommander / BattleTech" intellectual property when it comes to electronic games.
Companies like Piranha Games Inc. or Harebrained Schemes pay Microsoft to get a temporary license (5 years in this moment) for the use of the I.P., but Microsoft keeps its ownership.

Use MWO to make MW5, get license from MS for another 5 years, use the time to farm more cbills... I mean $ from MW5 (thank modders for longevity) and the trickle from MWO to make MW6 just before deadline, bag another 5 years.
Maybe this time they'll get it right? I mean, the driving around in robots part of MW5 is ok, feels good? They just need to work on multiplayer, AI, storytelling, missions, maps, mechlab, voice acting, a couple of minor details:D
Set MW6 just before the clan invasion, IS gear only, set the DLC (or even expandalone) as the war of refusal(probably have to use the MW2 style play both sides but accept that actually JF wins), DLC 2 is the clan invasion . There is plot for days that they can work with (and hijack for alternative outcomes). MWO2 can be born out of this... right?

To all electronic games based on the BattleTech universe IP, no matter if those games are called MechWarrior, MechCommander or BattleTech.
And Harebrained Schemes got their license from Piranha Games

Harebrained Schemes got their "sub-license" from PGI.
And where has PGI got their license? Yes, from Microsoft, as I have said three times already. PGI can call their game "MechWarrior" only because they paid Microsoft.
