Since we are going for starter mechs, I agree with the posters that think the Iconic designs of a house ought to be the starters. It also works because in most cases these designs aren't the best ones available in 3049. While the lost tech versions of mechs are on the way off the production lines, your Avatar is not going to have access to them just yet. If the Devs are thinking the upgrade variants will be either something you can have your ride converted to, or you can just straight out buy once you have started play.
Starters for the FedSuns:

Light: Javelin (since the Valkyrie is unseen)
Medium: Centurion(Most common mech in the AFFS.) Enforcer (it is the mech people picture when you say Medium Davion Mech.)
Heavy: Jagermech ( Unless the unseen make it in. Lets face it though, starters will be the most basic/worst mech in the stable you have access to.)
Assault: Victor.

I agree with you mate, sad but most likely true..

for my self i like the sound of autocanon fire unless i go for a light mech ,scout or scout hunter then ammoless mechs is prefereble.

For Light it would be a stinger or wasp. The most common Inner Sphere mech that were massed produced.
For Medium it would be an Enforcer. It was only fielded by House Davion.
For Heavy it would be Hammer Hands. Another classic Davion design which inspired the Warhammer.
For Assault it would be either a Templar or Devastator.
Well if we are going 3049 than I would choose a Battlemaster for an Assault Mech.

We might see mechs like the valkery with there new art. Although some might not look that great like they did before.
The latest TRO 3085 that came out last october had them all included.

Hmmm i thought the Templar and Devastator came later. Though the Victor is an FS classic.

Templar comes out in the late 3060's, But the Devastator is being produced in Lyran space.

I'm looking forward to a Cataphract or Marauder 3D myself.

I would suggest that Davion starts with some lighter Mechs like the Banshee for example.

I would love an Enforcer. But I am VERY partial to them.

For Scout Light Mech for Davion should be Wolfhound/Commando for multi-support.

I agree with the Hammerhands as a heavy original to 2475 and a great board game mech also one not mentioned yet is the IS mech Battleaxe a 70 ton heavy that has not been in the game that I have seen unless Mektek has produced it but again certainly available in 3 variants starting int 2459 keeping with the Devs time line.

Unfortuantely both the HammerHands and Battle Axe are out of time-line as they are Age-of-War mechs that only come back into production in 3075 due to the Word of Blake Jihad.

Those are light slugger mechs, the wolfhound is a beast i love it but not really a scouting mech.

Looking for a fast scout with ECM and BAP, I'd be cool with a stolen Owens too.

The wolfhound is a poor mans medium- but a great mech, visually one of my favourites. I would assume the starter light mech would be one of the really light mechs (stuff like the Flea, though the Flea is supposed to be rare) and then either go faster/scoutier (raven) or bigger (Wolfhound)

Isn't the focus of MWO going to be Urban combat? If so I'd like to see these as Davion starters:

Light: Hornet, Dart (Both are supposed to be specialised for Urban combat).

Medium (this was too bloody hard to decide on and even marking stuff like the Hatchetman/Nightsky and the Cuirass as too cool to start with, I can't be more specific than this):
Uziel, Starslayer, Enforcer, Enfield, Centurion, Bushwacker or Blackjack (N.B. The Blackjack is another supposedly Urban specialised 'Mech).

Heavy: (Again I have discounted the Battleaxe/Hammerhands/Warhammer, Axman and Thanatos (Heavy Gauss potential on 1st 'Mech!) as being too 'good' for starter 'Mechs):
Cataphract, Jagermech and Maelstrom (N.B. If the Devs decide on role-specific starters then perhaps the Maelstrom would make a reasonable starter in the Command tree? Then if you wanted to stick to a Heavy Command 'Mech you could move on to the Gauss-toting Caesar - perfect name for a Command 'Mech too!).

Assault: Victor, Templar or Sunder. (Again, thinking of role-specific 'Mechs, for Command surely it's Battlemaster's all round unless you get a Cappellan Cyclops?).

Also before someone says what about Urbanmechs if you're so keen on Urban-specialised 'Mechs?!
I hate those trashcans.

What is up with all the clan mechs being suggested? I'd say Enforcer. I'd take an Enforcer over a Dragon anyday.

Assault: Victor, Templar or Sunder.

Lets see:

Sunder - Kuritan omni mech -> scrap that one

Templar - Omni mech, but it is FC design at least -> scrap that one, too

Victor - Despite common misunderstandment (due to the name), it is a Capellan mech produced in St. Ives, which is part of our territory now -> expensive for you

So that means that only good Assault is made by your worst enemy and you will have to pay trillions to get him. Why don t you just use the mechs your neighbours like so much? What is so wrong about blue Atlas, Awesome, Zeus, etc.? B)

I'm wondering about that and the multitude of 'mechs that don't even exist yet making it onto peoples lists.

I expect that we'll have a small pool of money/mechs to pick from at the beginning, ranging from light to heavy as every role can take advantage of any of these 'mechs.

First, Victor was also produced on Quentin, which was in FedSuns hands for hundreds of years. Even at 15 Victors a year that is like 4500 at 300 years. So there are bound to be a lot left. Probably most common assault mech for FS.

Secondly, the St. Ives Compact is a FedCom satellite state in 3049, getting billions in military support to remain independant from the Capellan Confederation, which is ruled by a total nutbag named Romano Liao. NOT ONE St. Ives produced Victor is in Capellan hands, and they are trading heavily with the FedCom.

Up until the forced reintegration of the St. Ives Compact with the CC in the mid 3060s, these two states were not friends. Not trading partners. Culturally similar? Yes. Allies? Far from it.
