I wanted to introduce a friend to.mech warrior online, but due to the way MM works for groups, and the low population, we have having issues, is there a work around im.not aware of with the faction or solaris 7 modes?

Faction substitutes Group Q. Solaris is dead too afaik. Otherwise there is no substitution for the lack of population in a mmo. Well except bots, but i would doubt that pgi is putting that much effort in MWO anymore.

Except on some specific days at a very specific time, GQ is dead. FW is good but you'll need to be able to at least field a deck of 2 mid-ranged mechs and 2 lighter mechs that are fully skilled otherwise you will not enjoy it and you'll end up hindering your teammates. FW is a group-oriented, end-game content.
Your best bet is to play QP but you and your friend can end up in the same match (but not on the same team a vast majority of the time) if you both click on the "Quick Play" button at the same time. It's what is called "sync-dropping".

I usually just settle for playing with myself tbh, less scheduling headaches and potential disappointment

you can always do a "private lobby" match - or 17, and introduce him to anything important there. has the advantage that no "unfriendlies" disturb the session when you explain stuff.
after that, throw him into a QP-match and he's got more than a fighting chance, and he can also try from there on if this game is something he likes.
