Clan lrms are not very useful within 180m, the miniscule damage they do within 180 is largely overlooked because it's pretty insignificant. Despite having more tubes clan mechs don't get the quirks for the best IS lrm boats, like the Fafnir-5E, AWS-8R, TBT-7M, and ANH-MB. Those quirks make a massive difference.

The main reason to take a clan lrms boat is if you want a fast lrm boat as otherwise ab IS mech is going to be better almost every time.

Clan LRM doing some damage under 180 is a strong point of clan LRMs but overall in close range fights with LRM near cover at 200 300 meters IS are better. Coming in fat wads means you can't back in to cover to avoid them. With clan LRMs if you are quick you can avoid a lot of the damage.

Being able to do damage under 180m is not a terribly strong point in favor of clrms imo as the damage is tiny. I have seen mechs eat huge numbers of lrms under 180m with open components and just keep coming. So yes it is better than 0 damage, but it's really not an advantage that makes much of a difference in reality and it's definitely not a strength that you can play to like all of the advantages IS lrms get.

The Clan LRM big advantage is ease of use. Sure ton for ton there tubes are not as good but it so much easy to slap clan LRMs on something. IS LRM you have to really work the mech lab a lot of the time to make the most of them. Because of clan omi pods hard points and LRM not being as heavy it much easier to build a pretty good clan LRM mech.

???

The process for IS is basically: look for sweet quirks, slap on lrm 40 to 80, add ammo/tag/probe, slap on engine, clag away. It's pretty simple.
