If I wanted to play PvE, I would go and play MW5.

adding npcs is fine it adds life to the game and gives something for the lower skilled players to farm. certainly dont want the mw5 infinite spawn tanks and helis that piss me off.

thinking more something like consumables, use it like you would an airstrike and drop pods deliver 4 tanks to the battlefield where they were dropped, vtols the same way except the might fly in from your spawn to the designated location and hold a pattern, shooting any enemy that comes into range. they wouldnt be anything more than cannon fodder. would be interesting in fp if the entire enemy team deployed their pets all at once.

one of the biggest problems with the game as it sits now is not so much the game itself (though it does have issues) its the lack of players. over time the game has boiled down to mostly just overly toxic meta cry babies who aren't happy unless every match is a12-0 win for them. any build not "meta" with start them bitching let alone one of the mechs that has sunk behind in the power creep. (though i get perverse pleasure in making the meta cry babies mad when i kill them with LRM). sadly any new player to the game has this to contend with so they often say nope and leave shortly after starting. hell i got a few folks from one of the Discord servers i'm on to give it a try and after about 6 matches or so they had had enough. one even loved the game but said they just couldn't play given that every match on every map uses the exact same nascar tactic. being in tier 2 myself and not having played much since the PSR rework i don't know how it effected things for them. all of them said that if there was a PVE mode they would have likely kept playing. each of them turned off their VC because they didn't want to deal with the higher tier players bitching because they were using trial mechs or some mech they thought looked cool but turned out to what others called crap.

in the end it will be overly competitive players the ruin the game for those that just want to have a good time. i'm sort of curious how these people would fair if they used stock builds. but i am getting off on a tangent. to get back on subject i think PVE would do a lot to breath new life into the game. not being a programmer i'm not sure how easy it would be to bring some of the AI programing over from MW5 to perhaps save some time on their end. also some cheap add campaigning might bring in a few players. (i have no idea what something like Youtube would charge for some MWO adds to be put into their rotation.). no matter what they do they have to keep new players in mind as well as us veterans.

Somehow, I don't see T1 comp groups getting together to harvest "bots."

As mentioned in the OP, there's something called product segmentation.
