Is there any reason why divisions aren't just organized by weight class? Have an open class as well. Then maybe events with battle royal option. Maybe I don't understand it well enough. Just a casual player suggestion because I am excited for good changes to MWO.

Battle Royale doesn't work with the base programming because its all written as 1 team vs another. Your team happens to be 1 or 2 people in solaris.

Divisions are based on the mechs effectiveness over previous seasons, and started as weight based.
Aka... if that mech did REALLY well, it moves up. If that mech did really bad, it moves down. That's averaged over all players who've played that variant. Its been a way to have more fair chances (assuming you have a decent load out) in any given mech you want to pilot. Wild cards might be mechs that are rarely piloted, which could be not classed very well... but that could be good OR bad.

Basically, they tried to bring it back to the skill of the player, and equal out the mech's strengths/weaknesses. Though the wild card is that you might have a bigger mech swatting at smaller ones... not necessarily just face tanking another big mech. And a light might have to dodge AC50 shots, rather than chase another lights tail in a circle. So.... you need to be well rounded in skill and loadout.

If there were an 'open' class, you essentially have all the current Division 1 mechs winning, unless a player was really sub par, or you dropped against a mech that was a lower division. (don't think I explained that well enough). Basically, if you choose to drop with a less lethal mech... hope the other player does too.

The more division splits you have, the harder it is to get a match. BUT, that's why its a visible queue, rather than clicking join and waiting for a matchmaker to find you a matching division opponent.
It would be nice if there was a chat room or something, so you could communicate about getting into a match with less crossing of fingers. Or queuing up and hoping someone else will hop on your division choice.

Because weight class is not an automatic indicator of performance. If you take a look at how the divisions are assigned, you'll see that more lights are in low divs and more assaults are in high divs. Some outlying lights are good enough that they've been bumped higher while some outlying assaults are bad enough that they've been bumped lower.

Echoing what chevy and Horseman have said above, heavier is not necessarily better unless you're talking about division 1... if you drop in anything that isn't a ANH-1A or ANH-2A you are going to be at a disadvantage. The divisions are otherwise relatively balanced (RELATIVELY)

It has been a month or so since I have looked at the leaderboards, but when I did look top 10 performers looked like this

Div 1. ANH-1A and ANH-2A only
Div 2. All assaults. Mostly COR, FNR, and ANH.
Div 3. Mixed bag. Mostly assaults but number 1 held by a heavy. Medium at number 8.
Div 4. Mixed bag again. Mostly heavies and mediums. Some assaults (all of which are CGR).
Div 5. Mostly mediums (SHD and DV). Some assaults.
Div 6. All mediums (WVR and DV stronk)
Div 7. Mix of ASN, HSN, and KFX.
