So I was wondering if it would be a more gentle introduction to the game for new players to play Small Story driven historic battles VS AI. Like what either warthunder or world of tanks do. Cant remember which it is.
The reason I think this might not be a bad idea is two fold.
One: it would give new players a place to cut their teeth on with a lance of similar skilled players, to get used to mech handling, weapons and heat etc before jumping straight into PVP against people who probably are a lot more skilled.
Two: It would give people a bit of back story into the universe of Mechwarrior, give them a narrative to connect with. If you could get people to be more emotionally invested in it by doing some of the pivotal battles of the Civil war for example, they might be more inclined to stick around and play some more for their chosen faction.
Just a random thought I had. Dunno if it would work or even be doable, but I do think it would help player retention. And as I am not a lore hound nor have I read the books etc most of my knowledge of the universe comes from the games I have played, so learning more about those times would nice for players like me too.

Well, the only AI, that we have ever seen in MWO, was that VIP Atlas in Escort game mode. And perhaps you remember that it was not an especially smart AI.
I do not think that PGI would invest a lot of work and money into creating something what would be used only by a few new players.

The ideal would be to have a game with robust offline and online content, like some of the combat flight sims that are floating around but that's probably not a realistic option for MWO.

Well, there is MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries (offline content) and MechWarrior Online (online content).
I think that PGI had some hopes that MW5Mercs players will move to MWO after completing their MW5 playthrough, but I do not think that it has happened on a massive scale.
At least I do not remember seeing here any PGI's welcome like: "Greetings! So you have moved from MW5Mercs to MWO. These things are different from MW5. Do this, but don't do that. Strategies and 'Mech builds that work in MW5 do not work here. etc."
PGI just wasted another opportunity how to attract and keep new players in MWO.

And the new players get screwed in Tier 1 matches. Thats maybe the most stupid thing i have ever seen in a videogame.

1:Since 2015 PGI has no IT and Technical Crew longer for MWO
2:PGI has a Good UE4 Team seeing MW5
3: PGI can not make a new MWO 2 with UE4 in the next 2(a lot Work) Years and without Money
4:With MWO (old Cry 3Engine heavy modified from Experts) and the new Crew (only UE4 Experience)no Chance to make money
5: PGI Staff has no Interest for help from Community (seeing all the Ideas and Works over the Years in the Forum like Gamemode Ideas, Maps )
whats now ?

Does Paul even still work for PGI? So much silence.
Well, I guess that he still does.
But it is hard to say with any degree of certainty.
When two previous MWO Community Managers were fired, Russ Bullock kept absolute silence. Only when the players kept asking "Why are not those guys around anymore?", he admitted (after some time) that they no longer work for PGI.
