Is there a tutorial on how faction warfare works? I've been playing quick matches mostly but I'm considering getting into this mode.

There are guides indeed.
Leone signature and also head to the Faction Play forum for more.
Untill you have 8 fully kitted out mechs with decent builds, you should stick to Quick Play for now.
There is no match maker in FP so it is basically no mercy. Hence if you are not experienced you should sit it out until you are.

Yondu got a good build an short map strats guide in fp forum.
In general u should have at least one extreme range deck(IS Erlarge with tc 10%range quirk and full range firepower for example) using mostly of the tonnage limit for your 4 mechs. And one mid range (laservomit or dakka) for the faction IS or clan u want to start with. U will meet a lot of experienced players in fp. Trading big alphas is far more common than in qp. So best get in touch with some of the fp regulars or a unit to get the basics. Since face time tend to be low lrm are not encouraged. Rule or thumb is drop from heavy to light and dont reinforce. U want to die in waves.
