There was a time when a Timber Wolf with ECM was considered too much heh.

Well, ECM has lost a lot of its former power.

yes it has.

it is still NOT at the point where you consider it.
you can mount it (without any major disadvantage) somewhere? then you will.

not saying ECM is too good - but saying we have too many reasons to take it.
-in any "proper" FW match (and probably comp, no clue there), the benefits of ECM are there, but not "that great".*
-in the current QP-chaos however, there's a lot of free locks you just don't care about, pilots that "don't see you", despite you shooting them in the face for like half a minute at that point and so on..

now, maybe things look different in current T1 - I don't know, though I strongly assume that ~not~
ECM equals A LOT of freedom in QP, and naturally people take it.

it's a guess, but I think that without the free lock nonsense, and people learning to operate on their own, including the use of eyeball mk1+2, the benefits of ECM weren't quite were they are now, and thus it would be less of a "no brainer"choice*

*I find my personal "evidence" every time I log in and try a different mech; I built them all for FW and with different roles, and I rarely use the sensor tree or ECM at all on these in general. clicking on QP with these mechs, it is just astonishing how many "incoming missiles" there are trying to pepper you - all the while my ecm-midrange-hellbringers haven't even heard of missiles for the most part.

It is not that simple. Some OmniMechs (for exmple the Sun Spider or the Night Gyr) have ECM in an OmniPod with no other hardpoints, so taking ECM means a serious loadout considerations. I have eschewed ECM on my Sun Spider in order to mount more weapons.

The Mist Lynx in particular has to absolutely gimp itself just to mount ECM.

see how clever I've already considered that and woven into with that " (without any major disadvantage)" ? Posted Image

yes, on quite a few omnipods there's a decision to make, and that is good.
however, when it's no decision at all, I think we all can agree on "we take it", right?
[for QP ofc, fw/comp has other considerations]

Sure, ECM is useful.

Although in Tier 1 it is not crucial. I mean, you rarely see LRMs, ATMs have been nerfed recently, so not many people use them, and Tier 1 players usually do not run Streakboats, prefering SRMs that can be aimed where you need them to go. All in all, you do not see too many guided missiles in T1.

But of course ECM can give you the advantage of "cloaking" your 'Mech in bad visibility conditions. Definitely useful for that weight.
