I have been a supporter of MechWarrior 5 from the beginning, but I do not have Windows 10 nor will I. I play many older games that are unsupported on Windows 10 and Win 10 will be unsupported by Microsoft in 2025 (or scheduled to be).

Right now, and in the past MW5 has run smooth and fast on Windows 7 x64, but I read on Steam minimum specs are Windows 10, so I wonder if this is just a lack of info? I see on the MW5 website minimum specs are now listed as Windows 8.1 or 10, but obviously MechWarrior 5 Mercs runs fine on Windows7. It always has since the Beta version.

Update: YES MechWarrior 5 still supports Windows 7 x64, but I did have to uninstall my old mods. My mods may still work with a reinstall, but just enjoying the vanilla Davion campaign right now.

I'd intrepret this as not officially supported but probably going to work regardless Pretty typical for obsoleted OS versions and software that probably runs on them but can't be guaranteed to.

the core game engine has not seen meaningful changes in nearly a decade, it will run fine.

I ran MWO on graphics lower than minimum when it came out and was fine.
Dunno, maybe they just rate needed equipment incorrectly.

its likely that steam doesnt want to promote a stale platform. they may even be getting a kickback from microsoft to remove older versions of windows from their requirements.

Where did you get that from?

Windows can have certain APIs that are required to be used. If a newer version is used but is one that an older version can't use which has its own API use that is required to play the game then the game won't work.

Backwards compatibility with an older OS isn't a given. Eventually stuff changes to a point where the older OS can't do it.

its not like ms has never done this before. remember in the 00s when ms was trying to shove their xinput library down everyone's throat, and hotas users hated it because of its limitations.

That is true. Throw out that Sidewinder you bought last month, we changed our minds! They certainly did drop Sidewinder hardware like a hot potato after hyping it all year.

But, either MW5 continues to support Windows 7 or I can't buy it, even though I shelled out all that money to support MW5's release with the Mercenary grade package. I remember thinking WTH are you doing? But it's MW5, the game Microsoft sat on for over a decade.

i dont really see why we need a middleware when any computer with usb devices can support native usb hid out of the box. direct input was kind of a throwback to the gameport era, xinput was a direct port of xbox code, now we use rawinput which is kind of derpy (see the implementation in mw5 for proof). i used sdl in my game engine so i could run it on any platform i want, it has some limits, like a six axis per stick limit, but its less restrictive than xinput and easier to use than rawinput. microsoft always trying to slow things down with its proprietary middleware apis.

Still no revision on the OS change thing so I probably won't be able to play MW5 anymore even though I have been playing it since it came out and supported it when it was first announced.

I can not afford to shell out a thousand bucks for new peripherals and programs that are Windows 10 compliant and I am not building a new Windows 10 PC. A lot of players will explode if they can't continue to play MW5 though.

i still highly doubt the game or engine changed significantly. unless the installer doesn't try and block you from installing on win7 it should still work. i think them only officially supporting 10 might be a product of the mw license extension deal and is only corporate propaganda. ms wants to convert as many installs over to win10 as it can, and this is just the bs it uses to convince people to give up on 7.

Also, you don't have to use steam if you're worried by the min reqs, EGS gets the same update, the same DLC and you will be able to play coop with steam users, XBOX users, GOG users and so forth alike.

But anyway, you should move on to Win10 as soon as possible.

Yeah, you're not going to find anyone officially supporting an unsupported operating system. They'll give you "best effort", but at some point there will be a DLL update which leaves the old O/S behind. A talented modder could adjust for it, but a software company won't continue to patch for old versions of an operating system unless there's a lot of money involved.

I have one computer for older games (Windows 8), and one for newer games (Windows 10). That's just how it be.

Because Microsoft supports 8.1 through January of 2023. So we’re still go on that platform.

Well I have to say this would be abnormal for game developers to drop the previous Windows OS when Microsoft says so. In the past, say Windows XP, XP was supported 5 years by most game companies after Windows 7 came out and 3 years after support stopped. Dropping an OS one year after it stops receiving updates is absurd. At any rate it was a Windows 7 game when I broke my piggy bank to chip in to get it made in the first place. I assume it will continue and will find out later today. Epic is slow today.

Oh yeah. I remember through the PPC-filled haze that this DLC was delayed 6 months to not coincide with Cybopunk 2077's release. Cybopunk 2077 does support Windows 7. Must have been before the big Windows 10 only push.

So, yes, MechWarrior 5 still runs on Win 7 x64, but I did have to uninstall my old mods to keep it from locking up on start.

id be using it if modern hardware supported it better. i got a lot of things on my mobo that only seem to support win10, which wouldnt be too bad except for the fact that its critical things like usb3 and networking, and possibly nvme.

mods broke it for everyone it seems. or rather the update broke the mods which then broke the game. thats sop for most games with mods. gonna have to wait for the mod authors to update their stuff.
