I am experiencing the exact same problem as the OP, and found this thread.
Been using the same machine since I started, cable connection, no VOIP. (Using fullscreen mode though - is that really a potential problem?) Worked fine except for the occasional crash for over a year. Then boom, all of a sudden I get Server disconnect errors and can't rejoin (invariably get the same error when trying). I don't think it's on my end as nothing was changed here and the issue only crept up 3 weeks ago or so.

Today I tried 6 drops. I got a server disconnect in 4 of those attempt (and my butt handed to me on the other two, but that’s another story).
The automated penalty is just the icing on the cake here. Of course, when you’ve accumulated 2 minutes of penalty time just because you tried to drop and were repeatedly booted by the server, that’s extra frustrating.

Fullscreen is definitely a prime offender. But mostly when you use to tab out of the game, because MWO doesn't handle different energy states of your GC well.
Experiencing disconnects while joining a server is usually a routing issue. These things definitely came up more often since the world went lockdown. You can try different DNS for a start, or even VPN, if you have access to.

Thats not how it works in rural areas.
Small towns sold their owned utility networks, especially phone, to private nationwide companies decades ago. Local gov't and politicians have no say in it, unless you think senile Joe is going to do something about it.....

Anyway, I have Frontiernet. Go look up their facebook if you want a laugh. My rig is new as of last year, my SSD is actually a pair of M.2's, i boot up windows ten in less then 4 seconds. MWO still takes over a minute to log into, partly because Frontier is a complete joke, and partly because I have a gazillion mechs.

OP's problem happens to me occasionally also, mostly during prime time in my little town where Frontier oversold the network by about 40%. So I play other stuff, mostly, during primetime NA hours. Depends on the weather and time of year, I might hae some god weeknights I can play.

There is no other ISP option, besides satelite, because in rural towns the companies like Frontier have a monopoly on the physical lines. I pay 140 a month for a 4MB download and 128k upload. Yes, 128k. Actual DL speed is like 35% of the 4MB.
So I can do this, OR, get like HUGHSNET and have 700ping. On the plus side, I have one neighbor in the 3 mile radius from my country home. So I deal.

So, in a way I agree with OP, I wish PGI had a better way to monitor the discons. Myabe put a liit on them instead of first offence? like 4 an hour? I dunno, but I feel OP's frustration.

What's your local cell service like? I ask because I've taken to tethering my laptop to my cell phone while I'm on the road rather than deal with hotels charging me an extra internet fee for what in the end is a garbage connection anyway. On Verizon I get a ping between 90 and 120 in most places and the game runs smoothly, at least until you hit your tether limit, which I payed extra to have bumped to 50 gig a month.

Full Screen vs Full Windowed Mode may or may not resolve the issue if the game isnt actually crashing due to the alt-tab out, but Full Windowed mode usage would help eliminate actual crashes.

There there is the following advice.

With that said, if you are having connectivity issues, here is a few steps.
  • Wired or Wireless? If Wireless try wired connection from system to router.
  • Reboot router and modem.
  • Flush DNS procedure
  • If router/gateway (combo router/modem) firmware may have been updated, esp if rental. A few players across several games reported such, which changed/increased the software security settings of their device
  • Utilize a free VPN or two to test connectivity to the authentication server (log in/mechlab server) and/or actual regional combat servers. ISP may be having issues with their host file or there is a problematic router system your pathway is travelling through that is having issues. VPN has the potential to bypass said issue by rerouting around it, so instead of going from A-B-C-D-E-F, with a VPN it is A-B-K-L-E-F, where D would be the problematic router system.
You have some control of what happens prior to hitting your ISP network but once there and out through the several router management systems before before hitting the actual Authentication (consistent connection) then the regional game servers when dropping into combat, VPN is the only workaround.. Think of it as trying to take a different route to bypass road construction work.

Seems like 2-3 times per day my game locks up for a few minutes, and I can see Steam doing some manner of update for MWO (the little blue graph in Steam) if I re-start. This drives me crazy and I've been entirely kicked out of a pilot tier because of a loss due to this more than once, as you seem to lose HUGE pilot rating on a disconnect compared to gains on a vanilla victory. One time I was had just gotten into Tier 3 and gotten three wins with green arrows in a row and then lost on this update thing, and got kicked right back to Tier 4. Crappy. Anyways, is there any way to stop this moronic updating from happening? I think I have tried all manner of update settings to stop MWO or Steam from screwing up my matches with updates, but apparently not. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

I have literally never heard of this before. My best guess is that Steam is updating something else while you're playing. MWO only puts out at most 2 patches per month, Steam should not be trying to update it 2-3 times a day.

I'll see if there are any more settings I can check but it SEEMS to be with the MWO program within Steam, because if I'm in the Steam view, I get the little box with the "View Update" or "Play Game" options. And like I said this is 2-3 times per day. Posted Image

Mods often get updated, Games less often.

Have you disabled updates while gaming?

Yep, that should have pre-empted this silliness, but it did not. I changed updates today to only during a specific time (1-4 AM), maybe that will work....

I have my Steam and other game systems setup to download only when I initiate it. I do not recall what were default settings
  • Settings Library - Check Low Bandwidth - Disable features like Auto-load of community content
  • Downloads - Uncheck - Allow Downloads during gameplay / You have set a timeframe. I disabled auto update completely to have more control
  • Cloud - Uncheck Enable Steam Cloud
And if you have more than one computer up and running with Steam, make sure to check their settings also.

What i noticed aside of "Steam" is that windows updates tend to have a negative impact on my connection in general even they are set not to be downloaded until i say so.

After i initiate the download(s) the connection issues usually disappear when that is done.

Try the standalone MWO without Steam.

Losing server connection seems a recurring trouble lately. Either on the server side or thanks for the genuine net provider company. And since MWO seems to load things for ages, hmmm, reconnect is like, well, hell.
But thanks for a server disconnection today I got the "bridesmaid" title because it prevented me to finish off my target. That match were a stomp, my team could not managed to kill a single enemy (what also tells much about me to since even I couldn't kill anyone)...
