Ok, so for anyone interested, here's my short review and first impressions of Mechwarrior 5 : Legends of the Kestrel Lancers and the Legendary update.

At first, I had a major issue with Epic games store, that kept refusing my debit card, so after 3 days of trying and 2 trips to the bank, had to use a different card to buy the game.

But then, alas, I was surprised to find that the Expansion pack required no additional instalation. It was playable as soon as the payment had cleared.

Here are a few points that I liked:

1) The scripted story and missions are a breath of fresh air in an otherwise somewhat bland "go wherever you like" career mode.

2) The new biomes look great, especially the Megacity, which finally gave me a reason to equip SRMs. The only problem with megacity is that if you wanna try it in instant action, you have to lower your map size a bit. Only then does it show up.

3) 8 starting mechs instead of four. It seems a bit OP compared to the standard career mode, but you're gonna need them right off the bat.. trust me.

4) The legendary update that came in tandem with Kestrel made the game fresh and exciting, gave it a new look and what feels like tougher, more agressive A.I. I especially have to commend mech switching and melee, those two alone make it a whole new game for me.

All in all, Mechwarrior 5 is now a much better, more wholesome battletech experience.

I must congratulate PGI (for once) on a job well done, and hope there is much more in store (Mw5:Clans, MWO2 hint hint)

I only just started to play the Kestrel pack, so I will update as I proceed.

Thx for the review, the Megacity instant game map issue is for sure a helpful hint on top of it! :)

Yeah, I think for Megacity, there are only sizes up to large, so if you want huge, it doesn't show.. At least that was my initial experience..

I also noticed that SRMs are useful there (big shocker lol), but also, legs tend to get alot more damage..

But it is a joy to play there and smash up half the city.. it really brings the scale of just how calamitous mech combat in cities is..

well OP all i can say is your first mistake was getting anything from Crapic game store.

thanks for the insight though. i think i will still wait till my mods get updated as the game is sort of meh without them. i don't use many (not including the extra unit logos) but the ones i do use i don't think i could go back to playing without them.

Yeah, all i hear about Epic is that it curses FPS bcs it takes up so much ressources for whatever.

What i wonder is: Kestrel Lancers was launched the moment the re-release of a 20 year old Blizzard game blew anything else out of the water - how did that impact initial sales and future chances?

OK, so I've finished the Kestrel Lancers campaign missions..

My impression is that the missions were very fun to play, and I really DID feel like I was part of the 4th Succession War.

That being said, I wish the final mission rewarded some bigger rewards than it does, and its resolution text was a little less underwhelming.

The way it is now leaves it sorta hanging in the air, as if a further contract is to be expected.

All in all, I had soooo much fun playing this. It's worth the money invested. There are some minor peeves, but combined with the legendary update, this is a whole new game.

Keep this coming.

If you're referring to the Diablo 2 Resurrection release, I actually preordered it when it was first announced, and it released a day after the Kestrel Lancers, so I got both simultaneously. I played a little bit of both, but I finished the Kestrel Lancers first, because it was a new experience for me, and it was much shorter play-time. I can play D2R for months..

Yeah, you are right!

I did not preorder it, Diablo I was allways my fav but i played D2 with friends for years.
Great multiplayer games in a time when the genre was still developing.

I finished the Lancers campaign today as well and I quite enjoyed it.

Several of the missions contained a unique map feature to explore, or piece of equipment you can use. Only one per mission which was a bit disappointing since they add a lot to the missions. I also like that the timeline is linear so you are under some time pressure during the campaign.

I do wonder if the DLC was a bit more of a beta test of features that might be used in a future chapter. It's not that it feels unfinished, though it does need a patch or two. Rather, it's almost like PGI decided to keep some of the new mission features separate from one another to see how they affect the flow and/or balance of the missions.

That said, it does bode well for future DLCs, imo.

Good hunting,
CFC Conky

was finally able to play the new DLC (had to wait for Mod updates, though i still had to disable the mission tweaks one) and its not bad. i don't thinks its worth the price tag though. then again giving the state of games now days it rarely is. still as long as i was able to use my mods it was enjoyable enough.

I tell everyone that the latest DLC is the best "update" of MW5 and eclipses the original unmodded game by a lot. The scripted missions are fun and challenging. About the only criticism is the unrealistic number of waves of enemies that can spawn in certain missions. Also, sometimes one has to travel a great distance in order to access the next campaign. Lastly, and this is a minor criticism, is that the timing of the commencement of the actual Kestrel Campaign is kind of fuzzy. You get some time before having to initiate it in order to do some warm up missions and build up your mechs. And you do need as many heavies as you can cobble together. Luckily, you can add to your inventory as the campaign progresses, and repair along the way. However, one needs to pay attention to the interval between missions versus a mech's repair time which can vary quite a bit. Also, at the end of the campaign, you get no repair time so you need at least 8 capable mechs to get through it.
