I'm not just having fun. Yeah I was not as good before, and/or maybe I never was that good in the first place.
But I'm just getting killed over and over because NASCAR, whether i'm in front or behind it, or not participating on it.
Maybe it's the mechs. Any suggestion for a good Vroom-Vroom?

For the typical match where the main mass of the team is circling mostly together I find that anything running at least 80kph, and can engage in mid range opportunistic trading works fine.
But if your Nascar ills are the result of one of those game play periods where a couple of four-mans are running wolf pack light/mediums, and you keep getting on their team, match after match, and every g** d*** time your entire team trys to follow them, despite you and others typing into all chat "Don't try and follow the lights!", and then watching the team do precisely what you begged them not to do and then they proceed to get strung out and then rolled up by the enemy Nascar, AGAIN...well then, there is nothing you can do but rage quit or get into your Arctic Wolf or Lanner and join em.

Honestly:
hbk-iic-a
I think I somehow have some arm armor on mine, but you get the idea.
What you want is a medium or a heavy with fairly good mobility (JJ, high 80s+ kph) and a decent medium range loadout. This will let you position freely about your team's radar blob so that you don't get stuck behind in a fast rotation while still being able to do damage over the duration of the match.
People don't rate the mobility skill tree as highly as they used to, but being able to rotate and change directions quickly, as well as accel/decel to peak cover are still very important imo.

Step behind, let them all rotate around. They want it, let them.

Speed: 70 absolute minimum, 80-90+ preferred
Equipment: JJs preferred, ECM optional (for less aggro while you rotate)
Class: Light or medium preferred for less aggro, mobile heavies work good too, fast assaults might not be the best choice because they draw more aggro depending on which assault it is
Weapons: Mid to long range strongly preferred; stuff like PPCs, MRMs, Dakka, green/blue Wubs, etc. You can maybe pack some backup short-range weapons like a few red lasers or SRMs (i.e. I have a poptart Veagle with some SRMs and a Cauldron Born with 2 ERPPCs and 6 SPLs).
Playstyle: Keep shooting as much as you can (when safe) and keep a very close eye on the minimap so you don't get left behind (maybe even lead the rotation yourself), be aggressive but not overly so

I've found Clan heavy laser boats to do reasonably actually, and some IS heavies too like the Black Knight. They're quick enough, decently armoured and the heat efficiency of lasers isn't a problem as you kind of prefer a lower firing rate with Nascar to make time for repositioning. If you own the booster pack Timberwolf for example, it does quite well. I put a fractal blue-grey/black/white pattern on mine and added the elementals on to the sides - not the top one though. The result is an amorphous blob at 400m or further which is quite hard to distinguish. I find it's quite pleasant to move ahead of Nascar, take some shots, and then move on again, while rolling damage rather well. I say this though with probably only 20 matches played in the last threee months - not enough to get ranked. So disclaimer I might be talking out of my arse.

When I was last playing I was doing some pretty unethical things with Phoenix Hawks. They handle like lights, but without most of the drawbacks.

Flamer, small lasers/ MG's, and gauss/ LBX.
Everyone is bad at heat management, so you can fry them with a flamer and they'll keep stun locking themselves while you get up to the edge of your own heat then can wail on them with low heat weapons.
Then just hide in the middle outside of your pack, let your team soak up some damage, fix the other nascar team in place then start pecking around their edges.
Alternatively, play as a light and run out and radar mark enemies to steer your team where you want them.
It helps if you think of everyone as mid 2005-2010 quality bots. The only meta in the game is speed.

This is not so easy in higher Tier games, especially not during nascaring.
