They don't. Four slots from each arm and two slots from each sidetorso from Viper-C variant.

Eight heavy machine guns with double ammo if you stick to the full set bonus is not insignificant. You can do eight HMGs with two tons of ammo that provide four tons worth of firing, and you have enough weight left over for a smattering of lasers.

Or, as Steve pointed out, you can swap in four additional machine guns from the Charlie Viper and get to twelve guns, though you will then be stuck with JUST machine guns and also severe ammo shortages.

You need more precise friends. They were correct, of course, but you'll have regrets if you field it with more than 8 MG, as stated.

With max practical armor, you can get 3.5 tons of ammo for 12 LMGs and a CT MPL. (The reward Viper has an energy hardpoint in the CT.) That's not a lot of ammo for that many MGs. I'd keep the Reward side torsos and go for 8 LMGs w/4 tons ammo and 3 ERSL. (And if that's too much ammo with SO8 bonus, one or two of the lasers can be swapped over to SPL or ERML.)

One of my better/stronger/more-frequently-used 'Mechs is the six-HMG Mist Lynx, with a 15% fire rate quirk. Three tons of ammo is sufficient for that 'Mech, but kinda only just. Any less, even by half a ton, and you start feeling the ammo pinch pretty hard in longer games. An extra half-ton of ammo for double the machine gun count, even without the fire rate quirk, just sounds like a recipe for a bad time to me, especially with how anemic light machine guns are. Heavies chew people the hell up inside their reach; lights have a lot more reach but just don't do the damage.

I prefer the range of LMGs, but I have to admit that I usually use them as a supplemental weapons on bigger mechs. I have a pair on my Rifleman 3C (2xLMG, 2xUAC10, 4xERSL) and 4 on my Warhammer Widow (4xLPL, 4xLMG). HMGs have just never done it for me. /shrug

HMGs are brutal, but they're also heavy and hungry. I've never tried to use them as a supplement save on one ridiculous KCG that didn't work for spit. That Mist Lynx is the only 'Mech I've gotten any real use out of heavies on almost strictly because of its mad overquirked durability and because it's such a small, mobile target. It's proven exceptionally good at getting in and ripping isolated targets to flinders, and it's got enough meat on its fragile little 25-tonner bones that if I'm careful about it I can pick on someone with a buddy or two and still do damage, or engage in a big multi-man brawl without getting flattened. Part of that is HMGs having double the DPS of lights; that Lynx has better standing deeps than a number of assault 'Mechs inside its hundred meters.

I'm not sure if the Viper will work the same way, though I dearly hope it will. The Viper is significantly more mobile than the Meth Lynx, but it's also paradoxically much more fragile, and its arms come off the next best goddamn thing to spontaneously. I don't know if I've ever seen or been in a Viper that got to the end of a game of MWO without losing at least one arm. LMGs give it more reach but force it to expose for twice as long to do the same damage, and I don't know if the Viper has the toughness to make that trade.

I own the Arrow. The Arrow is actively terrible. Yes, it carries more quirks and has better ammo capacity than the Mist Lynx. What it does not have is any kind of significant mobility, which sabotages its ability to put its machine guns to use. It can't quickly come to grips with its targets, it can't evade counterfire, and it can't dance nimbly around larger 'Mechs while chopping them apart the way the Lynx can. It wanders up, tries to face-stare enemies to death with its admittedly intimidating quirked-up HMG array, and gets cored for free for its trouble.

I think that I start with the default (more or less) reward 'Mech and then I will add more MGs and/or ammo later.

8 hmgs, but if you are going to go with 12 you probibly need light or standard just to have enough ammo. you are probibly better off with the 8. im probibly going to run it in every possible way until something sticks.

do not underestimate 100t assaults with JJs after the JJ rework. I've been able to get up to the overwatch spot on Mining with the DWF-C

i noticed on my warden pack dires how much burn time i get with a single jet and zero nodes. in mining collective i was able to bypass most of the ramps entirely to get that lumbering beast up to the combat zone a lot faster. and on grim plexus, i was able to hop over the mountains near spawn that you usually have to spend a lot of time walking around in a dire. i think im going to go for maximum jump on the atlas to see what happens.
