Right now, because of soup queue (the merger of solo and group queue), the matchmaker no longer balances based on weight.
The reality is that you can still score extremely well in a light, but you're likely to lose a bit more, because on average tonnage increases the chance of a win. I say that as someone who plays mostly lights.
Keep in mind that you can always group up and run a bunch of assaults, and your win rate will go up dramatically. There are still a number of units recruiting. And the plus side is that, with group drops now mixed with solo drops, you won't be stuck in group queue any more playing against organized 12-mans.
The game does attempt to match by weight, but it prioritizes PSR over that, so if it comes down to matching you by weight or matching you by PSR, it will drop the weight parameter in favour of not matching you up against someone that will either trounce you, or that you will trounce.

The match maker is FUBAR.. I wouldn't really waste your time debating it.. Its broken as.
This isn't helpful.
We have to remember that at peak hours this game has maybe 1000 users. If every one of them was engaged in a match, there'd be just over 40 games, and that's likely not the case, youll have players sitting in lobbies, some in faction play, some in the mechlab. The sample size for each match is fairly limited, so in general, alot of release valves need to open before you can find a match. One of the first ones out the window is weight. One of the
last out the window is your PSR.
