What is the average wait time for a QP search?
I've sat and watched that damned thing spin for 5-8 minutes, yes I time it, and trust me it's not that entertaining.
Also, why is it that when the drop ship dumps me out I'm always facing out of bounds?
Every time, facing the wastelands and certain death.
I almost think it's trying to tell me something....

It depends on the number of currently active players. There are US peak, Euro peak, Russian peak, etc.
The player population goes up during events too - especially when they are starting or ending.
It also depends if you are the player who started the game and now the matchmaker looks for other players to assemble "your" game. Sometimes I click "Play" and in a few seconds I am in the game because I was the last needed player for somebody else's game.
Generally speaking, my average game search is not too long: I would guess some 2, maybe 3 minutes or so.

Just make sure that you do not hit the "W" key before you know where you are and what way to go.
I have witnessed a few times how some players hit "W" mindlessly, walked out of bounds and died before they realized what is going on.

Or Yesterday ... We dropped on Polar Highlands and it was the Domination game mode. The map is quite big and if you are piloting a light 'Mech, you should go fast to move to the domination circle. Anda guy in Spider dropped from the Leopard, hit "W" and jump jets ... and jumped out of bounds. Obviously he did not realize what way his 'Mech was facing.

I wish they would let us chat or exchange messages while waiting for a game.

For example, on Solaris City such things can happen.

He returned to the playing area in the last second.

Yup, not knowing a damn thing my first game I started moving forward...

Thankfully the big red warning came up and I was in a slow mech.

I alt+tab to look at stuff as soon as I hit the QP button. The MWO taskbar button will flash when the game loads you into the vote screen, and since I have auto-hide enabled for my taskbar, the taskbar also pops up in addition to the button flashing. Sometimes it takes 5 seconds, sometimes maybe 5 minutes; I honestly don't know, because I do something else while waiting. I will browse the MWO forums mostly - looking for the latest info on weapons and playstyles - since I came back about 9 days ago after a 7 year break.
