The Cougar

1) that the notoriously self-absorbed Jade Falcons would name a new frontline 'Mech after a big cat
2) why the Clans would base the name of the new 'Mech on the Adder's IS codename. I swear sometimes it's like FASA forgot that they'd given the Clan 'Mechs real names.
Otherwise, it's a little sad we won't see this one. That little b*stard carries more weapons than it knows what to do with.

Every successful MMO needs a significant expansion to retain the current player base and attract new players. I personally believe they will skip a few years per expansion in favor of story progression.
In the mean time, I'll most likely pilot a Wolfhound and Catapult to soothe my pain

I've seen theories about this. The only thing the Falcons like more than preening their own feathers is riling up the other Clans. Many clans found the Inner Sphere designations for their mechs mildly insulting. Therefore, when you take the Adder (a design originating with the Star Adders) make it "better", and then name it using the Inner Sphere designation for the Adder, they're basically saying that the Spheroids could design a better mech than the Adders. That makes the Cougar a mech specifically designed to tick off the Star Adders.
Always a worthy goal.

I have to admit that it has always bugged me to no end how the Inner Sphere renamed all of the Clan 'mechs based on their first tactical readings and encounters of them in combat and that the tradition spread throughout the Inner Sphere to this day, even after learning their Clan name's. Granted it is easier for most to remember, but the Inner Sphere name's for Clan 'mechs are really crap and take away any of the ferocity that usually comes with a name.
Take for example the Clan Hellbringer. There is a little sense of fear and uncertainty whenever I heard the name, but when hearing the Inner Sphere variant, "Loki" makes me think of the 'mech more like a child's toy than the Norse god that it was named after in mythology.
The same is for the Dire Wolf - much more menacing than "Daichi" and Timber Wolf - "Mad Cat."
And I will jot even go into the Inner Sohere variant for the Mad Dog. "Vulture"... seriously, it might not be important, but those Inner Sphere name's suck!
No wonder the Clans always think/thought of the Inner Sphere as childish barbarians, when they attribute childish name's to fierce machines like that!

Plenty of IS mediums can match it's speed or even outrun it.
But as a little beatstick, nothing comes closer.
