The basic game mechanics are almost good, missilplay needs an overhaul, pinpoint some iterative work etc.
Later OP techs like ECM, AMS etc, also need iterative work....

But how to make MWO great again:
Make it a Pilot Avatar centric game!

Have each Pilot work up the ranks via Missions where they can earn money, reputation, standing, connections etc.
Mechs are Mission based, Missions are Theater based, acces to Theaters is based on the progress of each Pilot.
The goal is to get as much money and reputation to enable you to buy and rework your own Mech, Lance, Company etc.

Pilots speialize on Weightclasses and Mechs, top specialistskills are only auireable if you commit yourself to a specific Mech in a specific weightclass.

Customization must be plenty and each Pilot is like each Mech individually custmomizable.

Matchfinding/making/socializing goes via Warrooms/Cantinas (acting as Lobby for Soldiers/Mercs) were each Pilot Avatar is shown off.

Missions and Maps can be staged so according to the success in a former Mission you are on attack, retreat, rescue, escort (not NPC but try to get a PC in a damaged Mech to a certain point of extraction).

So, i stop here, there are possibilities aplenty, simply dont restrict yourself to a certain specific playerbase and playstyle!

I've always assumed that the skill tree is your pilots role playing section since you level it up as you play much like in the single player bt games.

To me the easiest way to drag mwo into the semi modern era would be to tweak the graphics so that the various settings are geared more for modern systems than 10 year old systems. Even setting the game to very high on all fronts still leaves much of the maps using lower quality textures and models especially in the distance so you have to force it to show them via console commands in a user script. MrVaad has a nice tweaker but it doesn't go far enough to help with some of the graphical issues only modifying the actual maps can do.

I've been saying MWO (and now MWO2) needs to be pilot-oriented rather than mech oriented since like.. 2016..

So yes. I agree with you.

If they ever make MWO2, they will have the opportunity to make the game that MWO should have been.. and make it much better, grander, more fun, more lore-full.. simply.. a whole lot more.
