Something's wrong with the mech status display in combat.

Posted Image

Hint: I have 1x ER LARGE LASER mounted on one of my mech's arms. The arm carrying the laser got blown off in combat and after looking at this display I was stunned to find that I could still fire my laser.

(If someone can tell me how to post images on this forum it would be helpful. When I give the dialog box the URL it returns an error messages stating "That image format isn't allowed here." or something like that.)

because MWO forums are ancient they require url to that picture not to website that is sharing them... so you need that address that ends with JPG, PNG, GIF and so on... (in this case https://i.imgur.com/8hg5z0B.png)
Stupidly annoying because for example screenshots in steam library that should be extremely easy to share are not shareable here as a pictures.

On topic do you have whole picture that isn't clipped?

The URL you're using is not the URL to the actual picture but rather a link to imgur's wrapper page that includes your picture. In order to use it in this forum directly go to your imgur URL and right click on the picture to open up the context menu. Pretty much every browser should list an "copy image link" option there to get the actual picture URL. In your case it should be:

https://i.imgur.com/8hg5z0B.png

When used in the image tag of this forum

[img]https://i.imgur.com/8hg5z0B.png[/img]

it should result in this:

Thanks for your help guys. The picture is intentionally cropped.

There is something glaringly wrong with that picture once your eye catches it.

Forgive my ignorance but that looks like normal the armor doll of an undamaged mech:

Do you find it odd that the L and the R labels are on the same sides of the mech for both the front and rear portrait?

It would appear that the doll uses labels that represent what you as observer see as left / right when looking at the mech from that direction

Not quite. I have an ER LARGE LASER mounted in my mechs right arm. If what you say were true then losing the arm labelled "L" in the front portrait in combat would result in my laser being destroyed which is NOT the case. The arm labelled "L" in the front portrait really is the mechs left arm, not merely an observers perception of the right side of the mech appearing on the left from their perspective. This happened in a game where the arm labelled "L" in the front portrait got destroyed and I was still able to fire my laser. (I carry extra ammo in my mechs left arm, no weapons)

The front portrait doesn't match the Home view of the mech nor the Loadout view. This is incredibly disorienting for a new player like me.

Think of your eyes as x-ray vision, and you're looking at your mech while standing behind it. You first see the status of the back, then you drill through to see the status of the front. Which side should the left arm/torso be?

Let me repeat this:

Welp, sorry, but this way is better. In the mech lab, you're looking at your mech from the front. On the battlefield, from the back. It is much easier this way.

took me a moment to figure your problem in post1; and: yes - it is disorienting for new players. otoh you'll get used to it very quickly and it's "easier" to realise where you're getting shot at, once you're behind mwo's logic of displaying stuff.
in short, and just to recap:

when YOU shoot somebody: his right arm is exactly where you think it is - on his right, aka "left" in your field of view.
most people are used to that and don't have to x-wire thoughts on it.

when you're the one GETTING SHOT at: the display shows stuff on your mech-puppet from YOUR point of view.
now, your right arm is instinctively on your right. if it'd show stuff from a frontal view, you'd have to xwire thoughts right here.
so the display shows stuff in such a manner that you don't have to - aka from you POV.

you'll see: you'll get the hang of it quite fast :)
yes, logic tells you that one dmg-display (enemies) should show the same stuff in the same place as yours, but for instinctive behavior etc, it actually makes sense to present it in the way it does ;)

"it actually makes sense to present it in the way it does"

Now that I know what's up I suppose I'll have to get used to it. It's still deceptive to label it the "front view". It's really not. It's really and X-ray view of the front coming from the rear.

yup, it is deceptive.

think of it as "your point of view" and you'll get used to it, quickly.

Yeah I can see the confusion. What's worse is that the R/L front view IS flipped on the enemy paper doll so it matches your perspective (no xray view from behind). To make matters worse, in MW5, iirc, they DID flip your own paper doll so it's different than MWO.
