Nova's hit boxes and low hardpoints aren't good - new players will get demolished faster than is fun. For breaking into the Medium class, you want something that's survivable.

On the serious end, Stormcrow is a pretty newbie-friendly medium. Vulcan also nice after engine swap to LE and rush with the speed of a light...

The Stormcrow spreads damage walking down the street. It's a great 'mech for new players.

also don't forget the Shadow Hawk, pretty survivable and often underestimated.
