From what I can see is that the 40xx line is going to have some serious power connector failure issues and that you will more or less be needing a new atx 3.0 psu to allow the gpu and psu to properly communicate on how much power is needed. Apparently the adapter cables for atx 2.0 psu lack the data interface(doesn't exist on atx 2.0) so the gpu can draw peak power much higher than the psu can handle either tripping the protection or ending some caps in a shower of majik smoke and sparks. There apparently are also some other flaws so evga decided to bail and probably focus on their psu line which should be very profitable since most 40xx adopters will be needing a new psu.

Found the issue. Shoddy connector design strikes again but the good news is that its easily fixable via quality aftermarket cables.

Well, it is reported that aftermarket cables also melt on the connector, so there may be more to it...

I guess the question will be were they quality aftermarket cables that were designed to fix the issue or just copies.

At some point, when you become to small and to cheap you can not scale the tolerances for security/safety accordingly down, you have instad to upscale the tolerances massively to get a reliable solution - then you may end up better not change a working solution in the first place...
