it still has that bipolar settings configuration with the old style control panel mingling with the new one that doesnt know if its a phone or a previous windows version. its been like this for 3 versions now starting back in win8. pick one or the other and refine it. i also im having to use the command line, power shell and reg edits more just to make it do what i want it to do. if thats going to be the way it is, i might as well just switch to linux where there is one terminal to rule them all. i could get a 7 machine to do everything i want it to do without touching either of those things or installing 3rd party software to fix the ui. 8.1 and 10 were at least acceptable, only requiring openshell to fix the lack of a proper ui.

While my average FPS changed from about 60 to about 130 with the same settings, honestly, in terms of actual gameplay, it's hardly noticeable.

I went from 7 to 11, same as you not sold on the gui - but I had new software that required 11 for whatever their reasons were so I was kind of stuck. I've got one of the NVME or whatever ssd protocol it is for the boot drive and the thing boots as fast as my android car deck. It's faster than it takes for the monitor in standby to cycle on, like 5-10 seconds to desktop <- this I do appreciate. Was still a minute or two with win 7 running on an ssd.
I'd like to put everything on ssd for the speed, but after having one fail and not being able to recover anything I'll stick to a little slow disk speed for my games and software/recording storage and just let the ssd run the os. I've got 20+ year old spinning drives that still have the faintest spark that I can boot up and still pull off old recordings and sample backups, slowly but it works.

I had a 10 year old, fairly powerful rig (even still 10 years later was holding decent spec wise) - the boot times and the sheer quietness of the alienware, plus knowing I didn't need to have a 800 watt psu to do the same stuff I do freed up some amps for my hardware synths and just starting euro rack build.
Never did any fps testing, but I reckon I probably am at the same or maybe slightly more in MWO, but I also had a pretty ridiculously over specced vid card for just playing MWO before as well and 64 gigs of ram, which is probably the only upgrade other than maybe a second storage drive just for recordings I'll make to the alienware. These new boards are apparently capable of 128 gigs of ram so I might just throw the whole works at it sometime in the next year, that's a f-load of buffering capability.

In my experience you get what you pay for on ssd since its such an open market. There were only a handful of HDD makers vs the rainbow of vendors you can get ssd from now and range of quality is massive. I just stick with samsung and they haven't failed me yet. My first ssd was a 1tb samsung 840 pro that has had a home in three systems so far and its still showing as healthy on the write lifetime left. I'm currently using an nvme samsung 980 pro 2tb and wow how much they have improved over the years. This one has an even longer write cycle lifetime so I imagine it will still be serving me well a decade from now. Statistically if you only use it as a storage drive for static media they have an indefinite lifespan.

Yeah, the quality manufacturers are getting better over time. But its wise to always have your files in two places in case something malfunctions, melts, floods, blows away, or gets burgled. I use Dropbox, for example.

A samsung is the one I had fail, could be a fluke who knows. Same as I've had extremely good luck with WD normal drives and friends in south africa have the same drives fail but never see failures with Seagate.
Part of the problem is that I primarily use the computer for music and sound production, recording and arrangement/mastering so it ends up being a lot of writes of temp files with the software then add on the recordings and samples/edits when layering sounds. It just all adds up.
I do genuinely like the speed of ssd and flash media but the idea of losing a month or better of work because I didn't get time to do a backup to my nas again just bothers me about using them as a primary storage. Also do tile as primary work and service repair/handyman work after/in-between jobs during the warmer months so there's times when I'm out of the house for work 80-90 hours a week for months on end and just don't have time or energy to do backup like I should when I just want to relax and work on a sound project for a few hours.
Winter is nice since I just cut it down to tile, some plowing and only emergency service for family/friends. More time to do a little gaming and more focused sound work. The crazy snow drops and not being able to get out to some jobs is actually what got me to purchase MW5, really had no intention on it other than after a hundred or so matches back here it just got pretty stale without my friends to chat with. Still wish they had put some actual effort into making this more than skirmish/deathball and never made the push for the more arcadey twitch shooter style.

i got a crude nas on another floor, which i use for big files (like disk/drive images), media, and backup. would probibly be better to have a copy in another building. especially since i don't have a complete copy of the big data in a second place.

custom water with cpu delid and liquid metal with rocket kit copper IHS, ekwb GPU full cover waterblock (most 3070/Ti waterblocks will work on 3060/Ti's) and a alphacool modularity 360 full copper rad with papst 12-30v 120mm fans. (they have a separate PSU normally run around 14 volts)
13700kf at 5.9ghz 1-2 core, 5.7ghz all p-core and 4.5 ghz all e-core never breaks 95c (it can hit 6ghz on 2 cores and 5.8ghz all core while keeping temps under 100c the voltage is scary AF)
3060ti water cooled at 2100 core and 15500 mhz ram and STRIX bios, can go higher but tends to crash the driver, inconsistent ability to boost above 2100 core from idle, you have to OC it in stages and keep it from going idle to get it to sustain higher clocks.
64 gigs of ddr5 at 6000 mhz 36-36-36est for running MWO/games in a ramdrive (reduce stutter)
Kingston 2tb nvme SSD benches at 5.5-5.6 GB/s
normally gaming on 1440p, maxed out every graphics setting, mwo never drops below 100fps normally, high 150+ average. game still stutters occasionally when loading large amounts of enemy mechs with custom paint/decals

the ram drive does have a noticeable impact on reducing stutter, and is far more pronounced with newer faster ram compared to the old DDR3 1866 ramdrive.
