if you want to avoid headshots, dont sit still and dont shutdown.

Only Snubs and cERPPCs have splash damage, and it cannot splash the cockpit.
MRMs and ATMs are very unlikely to every cockpit anything.

A headshot takes up to 42 damage and a minimum of 21. Id be willing to bet next to no one is getting them because of spread missile weapons. Even with an LBX on a stationary mech it takes multiple tries.

I've gotten several recently with using pretty much nothing but spread weapons - none with the lasers. PPC and LBX is a bit more consistent in putting damage in the cockpit area than missiles but srms and mrms will often more than happily do the job if you are trying to put your damage onto st's. Reckon the spread from PPCs is probably the most reliable at putting damage to cockpits and with the way a lot of people drop armor its not hard for the cockpit to drop before the torsos.

Ive only recently started using lasers and honestly it is much more comical getting them knowing that the enemy not only was standing there staring but also that they did so for the full burn time while it was hitting their face.
I guess Im just bad with missiles but TBF that is something Ive needed to admit for a while lol. The velocity and lead mess me up because I never use them. I really don't think the splash damage from PPC is a significant factor though. I tried PPC, ERPPC, and HPPC when getting Guillotine and the only consistent ones were ERPPC and HPPC with direct hits. IIRC from old patch notes the splash damage is only like 3 damage as well.
I admittedly understand little about the mechanic so maybe I just can't exploit it well enough. In getting over 1000 cockpits though not one was without a direct shot. Again though, just because I haven't done it doesn't mean it is impossible, especially if you're doing it consistently.

No, as far as I know, if you hit CT with a ppc, the spread will hit both shoulders.
If you hit a shoulder, the spread will hit the adjacent CT and arm.

Could be, if that's the case I was getting some good shots off with them. I just assumed it was a proximity thing - closer to the cockpit it went there, to the st then it went there - or a ct would spread low damage to all the adjacent.

As tempting as it is, I rarely strip all the cockpit armor unless I absolutely have to, such as on a tricked out light, even then I've been head shot more than once while running and maneuvering in a fast light.
Probably more than half my headshots were just because the cockpit happens to be in the middle on that specific mech.
