Sorry for strange offtop.

I always prefer old mech names such as:

Daishi
Masakari
Gladiator
Thor
Loki
Puma

etc

What do you think?

I mean, those are the names I learned from previous games but they went with the Clan names for Clan mechs, no the IS names which makes sense. Except for MW2, the rest were all from the narrative perspective of the IS. This game doesn't have any kind of story though.

As someone mentioned, those are IS names for Clan mechs. Sometimes the origin of the name indicates which IS faction encountered the mech first.

Daishi (literal translation: Great Death)/Dire Wolf, Masakari (a type of Japanese battleaxe)/Warhawk, Koshi (literal translation: Small Death)/Mist Lynx, Nobori-nin (referring to the "sail" projection it has resembling a traditional Japanese house banner borne by samurai)/Huntsman - these were all first encountered in the IS by the Draconis Combine. Thor (Norse Aesir god of thunderstorms, due to its loadout)/Summoner, Uller (Norse Aesir god of archery, again referring to its loadout which is mostly long-range)/Kit Fox and Loki (referring to the Norse jotun regarded as an evil, insane prankster figure due to its seemingly crazy loadout)/Hellbringer were possibly encountered first by either Rasalhague forces or Combine forces.

Some interesting notes - despite the Mad Cat (Timberwolf) getting its name from a targeting system confusing it for either a Marauder or Catapult and flipping between the designations for those, the Catapult's shorthand designation is not CAT, it's CPLT. The Mad Cat II, despite visual similarity to the first Mad Cat aka Timberwolf, is not referred to as a Timberwolf II by the clans, in no small part because the name Mad Cat had gotten a reputation in the IS (which Clan Diamond Shark/Sea Fox leaned into in order to sell them and the later iterations, the Mad Cat III and IV). The Gladiator (Executioner) actually shares that IS name with an actual IS mech (the GLD series) but the IS mech was one of the first Kuritan-designed mechs, has a sullied reputation and is considered largely obsolete and nearly extinct by the time the Clans invade.

(Edited to add more info about the names)

In like how the Normans returned to paganism in the next thousand years.

No, but if you don't, Disney will sue you. And sometimes even if you do.
