we already have guass rifles that explode and uac's an racs that jam, and people want ppcs that can fire within 90m so for the ppc, heavy ppc and light ppc why not ad a chance for it to crit itself if fired within 90m equvilent to disabling the field inhibitor

or maybe ppcs just 'jam' at that range.

Yeah not a bad idea. Stays somewhat true to the table top rules about the inhibitor. It would make you have to take a risk by firing it inside the 90m minumum range at a target.

I like the idea, but having a chance to get already slow weapon broken completely after just firing it is a bit too much, even if crit damage won't deal all 10 damage that weapon has. I think that damaging component which have the PPC would be better, since then you would at least have more room for risk, and maybe it will worth it to keep a small chance of this self damage to crit something inside the damaged component. Bascially, you shot PPC and it dealt 10 damage to your arm and damaged another weapon, or a heat sink.

Would be slightly better than disabling the weapon for entire game, and also now it would make more sense to keep PPCs in arms, since then you won't be able to accidentally XL-check yourself by critting your ST with Light or XL engine. Many mechs would actually have their arms used more as a less risky place for PPCs.

Also maybe it should be implemented as a check option, like how lower arm and hand actuators are made - you can disable it and have minimal range for your PPCs, or you can enable it and make your PPCs able to fire within 90 meters min range, at the cost of either constant chance of damaging yourself, or only a chance to do self damage while being within 90 meters min range.

This does sound like a good compromise.

i would say the crit damage would be half the max damage of the ppc would be fair...

obviously none of this would apply to snubs and ERPPCs

Yes, of course, non-minimal rage dependent weapons have no reason to be affected by this, though i see no real reason to use this more risky option anymore since PGI just super buffed both Standart and Heavy PPCs, so they are dealing minimum of 5.5 damage in 0 meters radius.
