I would like to create a mech/build capable of tanking shots (even if it´s just one or two shots more than usual) while still retaining enough speed with not too low firepower ...
because lets be honest the game generally is just too much about damagedealing and it just got stale for me ... so i´d like to try something else ...

so the rough idea would be taking an assault with a big engine like 325 or 350 and full armor
what would you say would be a good chassis or what tonnage should i go for getting out enough speed to not having too much trouble repositioning?
also what should be the minimum damage i definitively should put on to still be a viable threat than just a meat shield?

Or would you just go for high end heavies instead?

thoughts?

Black Knight or Atlas, both have the highest armor in their respective classes

Black Knight

Are you sure about that? I find the BLK to be really squishy.

Anyway, in the next patch the Inner Sphere Orions will get a huge survivability buff, so I'd take those as heavy tanks

But to be honest, OP: this game is about dealing damage. Most mechs are use with full armor anyway, they all are tanky as much as their hitbox and quirks allows them.

Clan orion is fairly tanky and has masc and the typical clan heavy weapons loadout with a ton of sinks for uninterrupted pew.

There are no "tanks" in this game anymore. That being said, the best bets are the obvious ones: For assaults: Atlas, heavies: Orion, (at one time I would have said Cataphract, but its hit boxes are too easy to focus), Centurion and Bushwacker for mediums, for lights: Fleas because they are hard to hit and Urbies because its the lightest assault.

Along the same lines as the Bushwacker I would say all of the airplane-like mechs can be pretty tanky if you are fighting head on (wobble, don't necessarily twist): Stalkers, Marauders, Catapults, Champions, Crabs.

Orion IIC with MASC is only the hero ... still intimidating though

tanking is a non starter. assaults are about firepower. they only have enough armor to survive at most one extra alpha, maybe two if you roll damage well. id rather see assaults trading effectively than playing the hero charging in first and letting the team watch them die. assaults are more valuable alive.

manwalkers handle flanking better. you can still twist quite readily in a banshee and use the massive shield arms. you just have to not build for speed as much as the non existant engine cap tempts you. battlemaster does that better anyway (contrary to lore).

yea initially thought of getting me the stalker 7d
i think you´re right current high alpha long range play makes "tanking" really questionable ...

tanking is questionable regardless of range. it gets you killed just as easily at intermediate ranges. tanking in a brawl is more about spreading damage than having slightly higher than normal armor.

yea funny thing i have a PPFLD banshee BNC-3E with 350 engine (recent change in hard point line up is totally silly with having to place a small energy weapon somewhere in between).... definitively would not go higher than 350 but it´s still a slow 95 ton mech ...

... i´m kinda gravitating around the 85 ton mechs

used to be able to get ip up to the 72kph, but with the power creep towards more speed that kind of meh now. banshee used to be a lot better before the engine desync. you can still twist pretty fast with coordinated legs+torso. but it does make your legs more vulnerable. just shield the part that has more damage.

Nobody is going to say it?

The new Legendary Centurion is the only tank in the game. Posted Image

The Atlas is the classic tank 'mech. Piles of armour quirks, decent hitboxes, good twisting options. Not the greatest mounts in the world, of course.

Yeah sorry should have specified the skoll. It's one of the few non ecm light/medium class I will play. Its really strong in quick play and one of the few mechs I try to avoid directly fighting.

i can see it now, he pushes in to brawl, takes two alphas in the shield, arm falls off. pilot wets himself.

This is going to happen a lot and probably by many who should know better..

But if you know how to twist when in a proper brawling situation its going to be rather nice.

Well I mean it will be useful vs snipers to eat a few shots as you cross open territory. In theory this could be a useful equipment choice if they expand it to other mechs since it was designed to be used on any mech. This is just more live testing of something new since we have no test server anymore.

another 100-200m tops. if you can manage to get it into the brawl mostly intact, then it might be useful. but brawls are pretty rare.
