Only reason for such is build variability, that's it. Rename current ammo to "Standard".
Standard ammo stays as is to form a middle ground for all other types to base off of.
  • Armor Piercing (AP) weighs more, deals more damage to armor and less damage to parts. Their purpose is to shred armor on big targets.
  • High Explosive (HE) weighs more, deals more damage to parts and less damage to armor. Their purpose is to execute enemies lacking armor.
In addition to new ammo types, one can also stock up on multiple ammo types for the same gun and switch them out as needed. Switching ammo takes time and leaves one open, but allows for changing up strategies.

Additional details / pre-balancing to consider:
  • Different optimal ranges per type
  • Different heat generation per type
  • Different shot speeds per type

Oh how we’ve wished this was a thing for 11 years now. The LBX autocannon is supposed to have two ammo types, slug and shotgun. PGI could never figure out how to code the ammo switch, so it just has the one. And other ammo types exist in Battletech Lore for other weapons, such as Thunder and Swarm missiles for LRM’s, and Inferno missiles for SRMs. No love on them either.

PGI has never been capable of programming switchable ammo types since the beginning of MWO, even though the players have been asking for LBX Autocannons for years.

Sorry, but you are out of luck.
