Decided to give this a whirl since it was on Game Pass and I'm glad I didn't spent a cent on this.

Who decided it was a good idea to turn MECHWARRIOR into Armored Core?

Why is there suddenly a VTOL with more firepower and armor than an Atlas on the field? In lore, Battlemechs are the pinnacle of warfare, that's why they are used in warfare. Why invent something that is not in-universe like the Sokol out of thin air?

The same objective could have been achieved if the Star was ambused by a lance of Assault mechs, say, with weapons solely loaded onto their arms. Then the challenge would be to take out the arms ASAP. Still a hard challenge, and teaches the player the same thing, order the Star to target a component, without breaking lore and immersion.

As a veteran of MWO since open beta, played for more than a couple of thousand hours and have given up on the game since, it's sad to see that Piranha still doesn't "get it"

Ok, I'll bite a little. What is this Sokol you speak of? VTOL? Are you referring to the Apache legendary mech, that has some stupid horizonal hover mechanic, emulating the "Land Air Mech" mechanic of battletech games of yore? (Poorly I will add).Or is there some other mech called Sokol that's under my radar? So hey, again though, I get that it's your gripe to have you probably got waylaid by a rotary cannon toting Apache, flying across something like canyon network... aggravating for sure. But it's not an atlas. It's actually kinda funny too.... they like to leap in a straight line, "come at me bro' style", firing those rotaries, while flying in mid air strafing runs, but if you drop out of thier line of fire they either have to let off the jump jets and plummet, or at least sorta torso twist in mid-air to aim at other targets or track you... and as a midair turret they move slow drifting forward and can be focused by your team like a blimp. They do pop.

I love to get behind them as they drift forward aiming at something they think is worth their while, a side torso can often remind them that they are not a dirgible. They truly lack the armor of an Atlas and piloted like an Atlas they would likely dissolve. But then again, Atlases usually don't hover in mid-air pissing rac5 ammo on people, K3's being a slight exception - even they prefer hops to the heavens.

- Edit: I now have context, you are talking about the Mechwarrior 5 Clans game, recently released. Haven't played Mechwarrior 5... or Clans, so you can understand maybe why on these forums I'm wondering why you're talking about something called a SOKOL, on the Mechwarrior Online Forum, I don't always realize its specific overlap content to Mechwarrior 5 Mercenaries, or Clans.

I was a bit miffed at the Sokol and instantly thought the same thing about Armored Core. I like Armored Core and have played it since the first game, just as I've been playing Battletech tabletop and Mechwarrior video games since the 80s. Mechwarrior/Battletech doesn't need to endear itself to AC fans. I was really worried it might continue throughout the entire game, and I thought my suspicions were confirmed after the second Sokol fight. I've advanced much further along in the campaign now and I haven't seen anymore AC references like that, even almost forgot about it. So I'm taking it for what it was, a nod to another mech game with an early boss fight.

They had to make it "hard" for the AC reference. However, as you start fighting Dropships later on in the game, I realised that was more of a friendly snub to AC. "They have super helicopters? Hold our beers, Dropship incoming."

Edit: The second Sokol fight underscores this. As it shows you how much easier they are to kill that go around, once you have more than just light mechs. You end up proving mechs are superior to VTOLs.
