Support for HOTAS devices (joysticks, throttles, rudder pedals, and various button boxes) was an absolute joke in mercenaries. We were told that there would be improved support for such devices in clans, and what we got was the same ridiculous system of configuring a text file to allow for a tiny number of buttons to be recognised from a small number of compatible devices. No other game with HOTAS support is like this. Games from star wars squadrons, to DCS, to star citizen just have an in game menu that recognises your devices. Even if PGI's implementation worked, it would be an embarrassing state of affairs for any HOTAS supporting video game.

The thing is, their implementation doesn't work. I have a winwing stick and throttle. If I have them plugged in while playing the game, the menu becomes unusable. The menu buttons flicker and become almost impossible to click. I have to unplug all of my flight sim peripherals, or the game loses its mind.

For reference, I have 10 devices I use for flight simulators. Stick, throttle, pedals, UFCs, and button boxes. There is no other game I play where I have to unplug any of my devices so I can play the game.

Cyberpunk, the witcher 3, uboat, kingdom come, skyrim, and dozens of others all just ignore the devices and I can play with mouse and keyboard or controller.

PGI claimed clans would have improved support for HOTAS. Even many indie games are able to get it right. PGI, you need to do better than this. Your HOTAS support is worse than a joke. Please, for the love of god, play a game with real HOTAS support, and see how it's meant to be done. Then hire someone who knows how to make it happen.

And for the people who are about to come in here and say "mouse and keyboard is the optimal way to play" - this is a single player / co op experience. I don't need to play optimally. I can choose to play it as a simulator, the way mechwarrior was meant to be played.
