What exactly are the mechanics of this?

I'm only vaguely aware that it "Happens because something involving enemy target lock happened" but that's only through hearsay.

If you have at least one point into radar deprivation in the skill tree it will happen. It happens when you are no longer targeted by a enemy mech (default R). Just regular targeting. You dont have to have been locked with say a lockon weapon. Anyone on the enemy team pressing R and targeting you and then suddenly switching their targeting will cause it to happen.

Lets you know that you were targeted by a mech somewhere around. If you are in the middle of your team and see no enemies...chances are you were targeted from behind.

I don't know why, but I never notice the flash. I usually have full radar dep on my mechs too. *SHRUG* Guess I'm not observant enough!

Yeah I was in the same boat for a long time. But once you see it....you almost cant unsee it.

I just found out a few weeks ago, that there is a chirp when you get "spotted", it's almost like this stuff should be covered in some kind of "tutorial"...

This sounds... incorrect.

I don't doubt that your understanding of the mechanic is accurate, but the idea that you are given the beep after no longer being target locked by someone instead of when they lock on to you sounds like something was lost in translation from designer to programmer.
