Hi guys,

This is a question to my fellow EU players, especially from EU-W or Germany - have you noticed your pings to MWO's NA servers getting progressively worse over the last couple of months?

I used to get around 100-140ms ping to NA servers for years. These days it is still at that value, but will randomly spike to values up to and over 500 (and stay there), which is of course completely unplayable. I have had some viewers tell me they are facing the same issue, in particular with the ISP T-Online, which is the largest ISP in the country.

I'd like to know if other people here had similar experiences before I start taking this to support. What are your experiences from EU to NA?

doesnt help that the game is very bad at choosing servers based around the players in a match. it will give you an oceanic game where everyone's ping is in the 200ms range and maybe 0-2 people who look like they should be using that server. seems they do it the other way around, pick a server and then populate it with whoever they find. i suppose this respects player's server preference better (i havent seen the selection window in 6 years so idk what i have selected). but i think the game would be better served by a system that tries to reduce the net ping time of the match as much as is possible. keeping wait times low is also important, so maybe its time to get rid of the server preference and instead ping all the servers from all the players and chose the one with the lowest average. id rather sometimes be on the slow server than always be on the slow server.

This information is based on who Elo worked, prior to MWO going to the Tier/PSR system. And based on previous PGI observations, they likely changed as little as possible. With that said, the server selection may be based, in part, on the seeded player. The seeded player is the first player the MM selected, and if said player has only Oceanic selected, then that is the game server and it pulls all the players within the MM requirements who also has the Oceanic server selected.

As for the OP, try running a visual ping plotter. We have seen instances where the player's ISP routes the player through a different pathway, such has going east over the Pacific instead of west over the Atlantic. For the viewers, are said viewers also MWO players, and many on your specific ISP? At times some players have posted that the issue ended up being with their ISP and a system misconfiguration. And it was not only affecting MWO drops in NA but other games with servers located in the USA.

I would suggest testing/troubleshooting by rebooting everything, do a DNS Flush then finally testing with a few different free VPNs if you do not have own a VPN program, then if it allows change the servers. Yes, ping will likely increase but has the potential of being steady.

Could this possibly have anything to do with what you are experiencing?

It seems to be a Peering-Problem. With each match you get a new Serverroute and depending on peering your latency and speed may vary.
I'm using Telekom and experienced it first hand. Ping reaching 500ms or jumping between 250 and 380ms in a single match on NA-Server. Normal routing to NA ist around 114ms.
Technical starting point would be google with Telekom+peering or for example:

Yeah, I have had the issue for about a month now. T-Online as ISP. It is not a constant thing for me, but after being okay for a couple matches I notice the damage feedback having a noticeable delay, check ping and its 500+ vOv

Sounds I should try using a VPN, I might have better results with my ping then. Fingers crossed!

you know after years of not being able to bring up the server selection window, it finally appeared in the wild. so i was shocked to find eu was unticked, even though its ping time is less worse than oc, which was ticked. i loath to think how much wait time that cost me.

vpns are only useful if there is a problem on your usual route. i can imagine the encryption/decryption at either end of the pipe would be responsible for a measurable (but small given hardware cryptography accelerators in most network adapters) increase in ping times. it is possible to make them noticeably worse by intentionally chosing a sub optimal route, say you are in alaska, you pipe to switzerland, and use the oceanic server. thats got to cost you a half second minimum.

I have taken notice to this as well over say the last 6 months or so. Use to ping around70's in NA, and 100'ish in EU. Now it's more like 120ish, and 200 ish... Yes, I play on a mobile hostpot. Thiking that it as my phone, I played from home and that has even gotten worse...
