Inner Sphere or Clan?
What battlefield role is your 'Mech expected to play?

- Cicada-X5: not really a medium tbh
- ShadowHawk Grey Death: is there a good build on this mech?
- Wolverine Quarantine: kind of OK...
- Griffin Sparky & Ares: great mechs!
My 2 cents are thus on the Griffins. Ares if you're into PPCs (moslty Snubs), Sparky if you prefer lasers and/or a more flexible loadout.

I prefer inner sphere usually, but I'm cool with multiple options. I'm still a returning player so I'm not quite familiar with what roles I want yet.

I do like PPCs, so Ares might be fun.

I think you will like it. It's fast and nimble, and is one of the few mechs with a generalist PPC HSL+1.
The only "issue" with the mech is most/all weapons are on the arms, so there's no options for shielding damage.
The classic build is 3 Snubs, but 3 ER PPCs or 4 PPCs are also viable. Or you can do a pseudo Belial (4 LPPCs + 2 MRM10s) but, well, it much better on the Belial.

You can choose from the following 'Mechs:
Inner Sphere
- Centurion "Yen-Lo-Wang" - 1875
- Centurion "Onyx" - 1875
- Cicada "X5" - 1500
- Griffin "Ares" - 2062
- Griffin "Sparky" - 2062
- Shadow Hawk "The Gray Death" - 2062
- Shadow Hawk "Scattershot" - 2062
- Wolverine "Quarantine" - 2062
- Storm Crow "Lacerator" - 2580
- Viper "Medusa" - 1875
- Viper "Scattershot" - 1500
- Both Centurion Heroes offer only a limited number of brawling builds.
- Cicada "X5" has only limited selection of hardpoints and it can not carry heavy loadout, since it is just a 40-tonner.
- "The Gray Death" is a bland 'Mech (ballistic quirks, but 1 ballistic hardpoint; 2 missile hardpoints, but one is in the head) and "Quarantine" is slightly better (some quirks suitable for missiles).
- "Scattershot" supports a certain type of builds that not everybody likes.
- Griffin "Ares" has 4 energy hardpoints and it is quirked for boating PPCs, although you can use its 2 missile harpoints for missiles, if you wish. Not a bad 'Mech.
- Griffin "Sparky" can boat energy weapons in ints 6 energy hardpoints. Also quite good.
- Viper "Medusa" can boat 6 energy weapons and 1 missile weapon, if you wish to use its full-set-of-OmniPods quirks, but it is hampered by its limited tonnage (40 tons)
- Viper "Scaleshot" is a very strong SRM brawler (thanks its quirks).
- Storm Crow "Lacerator" is a 55-ton Clan OmniMech that can be used for various loadouts. It can also pack some firepower. Very versatile.
By the way, in two weeks you can claim Viper Prime Clan OmniMech for free, just for playing one game: Holiday Bonus Event 2024.

I'm interested in Lacerator and Ares. What weapons do you recommend for those two?

I run MRM 50 on my "Ares" with a few tons of ammo. But if you wish, you can arm it with PPCs - Snubnose, if you like brawling; Heavy, Standard or Extended-range if you prefer ranged combat.
As for "Lacerator", it is on you. You can boat ER Large lasers for sniping, Heavy Large lasers or LPLs for medium ranges, SPLs or ER Smalls for brawling. You can also arm it with ballistic weapons - "Lacerator" has some suitable quirks.
Really, it is your choice to equip your 'Mech to suit your preferred playstyle.

i don't run clan mechs so i can't say anything on those but you can always run something like this on Ares
GRF-AR (4 L-PPCs, 2 MRM-10s (2t ammo) running an LE-285 with 3 DHS and Endo and LFF)
as for the others i do enjoy the Grey Death myself. its a little slower than the Ares with my preferred build but it has more armor (of course you could strip out the AMS from my build for extra ammo or a bigger engine if ya want, we all have differing build strats that work for us.)
SHD-GD (1 AC/10 (2 1/2t ammo), 1 MRM-20 (1 1/2t ammo) 2 ER MLs, 1 AMS (1/2t ammo) running an LE-270 with Endo and LFF)
the build runs pretty cool so you wont really need to carry a cool shot. range wise MRMs and AC/10s match up pretty well. it would also be very easy to swap the AC/10 for an LBX/10 and go the sandpaper route (just keep in mind the GD doesn't have any spread quirks, it also doesn't have Jam chance either so an Ultra could be frustrating)
i don't actually own the Ares but i have toyed with picking it up a few times so have done some "on paper" builds. the only other one of the mechs available on the list that i do own is the Quarantine. i have never been a real fan of dead side mechs or builds but its a solid enough mech (i got it free back during the Covid event). here is the build i currently have on it.
WVR-Q (3 ER-MLs, 2 MRM-20s (3 1/2t ammo), 1 L-AMS running an LE-280 with 2 DHS, Endo and LFF)
being a dead side mech that pretty much all players that have been here a bit know well it might be safe to put an XL in it and get more speed or firepower (you can swap one of the MRM-20s for an MRM-30 if you make the AMS a standard with 1t of ammo and have enough tonnage left over to raise the engine a bit or add ammo. you have to remove the LFF though)
