First, the Viper moves in and out of cover 3 times in Classic control mode. Second, it does the same in Modernized control mode. Modernized allows it to ignore deceleration and acceleration when changing directions, giving a significant maneuverability advantage. Notice that when the throttle bar is max, the mech can change direction as if inertia has disappeared. The player should not gain an objective advantage from control mode.

This example is in third person to better show the animation and movement problem. First, the Viper runs evasively in Classic control mode where it’s movements are smooth and weighty. Second, it does the same in Modernized control mode where it looks bad, changing directions in a discreet chunky manner.

Leg animations are easily broken if moving forward and backward while strafing. This looks like a placeholder animation one would see in the alpha stage. It’s embarrassing for a finished product.

The leg direction indicator is strange as well. It’s reversed. Shouldn’t the moving arrow line up with my direction of travel relative to my facing? It’s confusing to have the minimap show one thing and the primary indicator show another. Maybe some people prefer it this way. Conversely, I noticed it within the first 3 seconds of using the Summoner in the Proving Grounds and scoured the settings. There must be a setting to disable the inversion.

The indicator lingers on the screen when in Modernized control mode. It does nothing and pollutes the HUD.

I know that what I’m asking for is reasonable because it’s been done. This mech is how you do mech movement with standard controls. Helldivers has mechs that don’t use tank controls and they are just as lumbering and weighty as those in Mechwarrior.

I am not saying that anyone is wrong for preferring one control mode over another. Modernized gives a distinct advantage because it overrides physics that are otherwise present in the game. PGI thinks that Classic controls make the game inaccessible to new players which is why there is an option to utilize the walking intuition that modern players are accustomed to. The least they can do is preserve the MechWarrior feel and put out quality work.
