I have noticed something interesting recently. I have 2 Blackjack - 1X's, one with an XL engine and the other with a Light engine. The thing I find interesting is that every time I run the XL build, I die from a side torso kill and every time I run the Light engine I die from a CT kill. I would say this happens, roughly, about 95% of the time. I play them exactly the same. It's almost like I have a sign above their heads showing where to kill each one the easiest...

I have the same experience with my rifleman builds.

keep dying from CT, so I switched to XL, then keep dying from ST.

Some loadouts very obviously need an XL to fit at all, let alone have any real armor, heat management, and/or be functional. Some build intuition from battlefield experience, others know Mechlab well. Using well known builds also telegraphs heavily. The higher up in tier the more all of this factors in, and the better those players are at target priority and reading builds.

Ok, XL on innerr ssphere mechs I learned a few months ago, you only need to kill a ST to kill the mech. Unlike clan mechs that just loose about 20% or more of speed, the inner sphere XL's loose the entire engine. When I learned about the XL's and Inner Sphere, I quict running them all together, except on the lights however, unlesss I'm building a tanky bugger!

Once you learn how to spread damage on a particular frame, most IS mediums run just fine with xl. Some need a bit of a boost to twist rate because of wide boxes - in the case of bunny ear st if you lose them you probably don't want to be in the match any more anyhow so you can usually just as well run xl and get the tonnage boost. Only reason I run LFE in medium mechs is if I need torso slots.

You may have overheated the mech and it start to harm the XL engine.

I think the most experienced don't see an issue with running standard engines on medium.

If you start to think of medium as armored light mechs , you as well have mechs like cicada and assassin who both serve the role of a light mech.

Don't let your hubris making you pick xl engine since it's a suicide pact.
