Sarna.net brings you a huge interview with Narrative Director Chris Lowrey

Inside The Storm — Talking Ghost Bear: Flash Storm with Chris Lowrey

"...MechWarrior 5: Clans is getting a Ghost Bear DLC after all! Ghost Bear: Flash Storm will have players take on the role of a Star Commander within the Silveroot Keshik as the Ghost Bears fight to regain their honor as the most powerful of all the Clans after falling behind their rivals during the Clan Invasion.

Not only will we get a new 12-mission campaign, but we’re getting new ‘Mechs, new pilots, and Elementals to command. To get the lowdown on what’s coming in Ghost Bear: Flash Storm, I once again spoke to Narrative Director Chris Lowrey at PGI in an email interview."

I hope this time the plot will be worthy of real clan members, not whiny children of traitors, but I'll wait for the reviews before buying. The interviews before the release of MW5:C were also beautiful, but in fact it turned out to be completely different from what I expected.

The interviewee specifically states that this time we're playing as veteran warriors; loyalty is not likely to be a question. But depicting most of the player's Jaguar star as "whiny children" was a deliberate choice. They're not far off being child soldiers. They're egotistical, cocky and confident because they've been taught that they are above lowly spheroids and have faced nothing to this point to disprove that (having won their trials and not experiencing defeat). Having the 'veteran' pilots Naomi and Alexander contrast that was also very deliberate, especially Naomi. She did not wholly buy into the Jaguar's vision (having been at the receiving end of the clan's BS) and was even critical of Aleksandr Kerensky, while Alexander remained totally loyal to his clan but was relatively level-headed and more in-line with command than most clan warriors fought with throughout the game.

That and it was Smoke Jaguar. Their entirely bloody Clan was basically whiny Children (kind of a constant for Crusaders in general, really).

Ghost Bears on the other hand are solidly Warden, with an emphasis on family, and don't have a pole up their @$$ about Freeborns either. So they should be significantly more chill. Well, as chill as Clanners ever get.

Pretty much... if anyone has ever read Impetus of War, it gives a great accounting of behaviors from new "elite" Jaguar warriors who've never fought against the IS. Matches up nicely with the childish behavior because, well, they're pretty much kids.

It's interesting to read about the introduction of battlemechs next to Omnimechs. I think the selection is a good one- Jenner IIC and Rifleman IIC as callbacks to Mechwarrior 2, as well as a pair of good looking models to work with, Kodiak because it's a ghost bear story and you can't have Ghost Bears without the Kodiak, which is also a great model. The Hunch IIC is related to the hunchback and thus, a golden child, but I think a lot of people are going to get shot up while driving it for the first time.

The line about repairing battlemechs being more difficult is interesting. Would there be any distinction between a modified battlemech and a stock one? I suppose time will tell. Might be easier to just acquire duplicates of the cheap ones and swap them around.

It's also neat for what the system opens up in the future- plenty of clan Battlemechs among the second line models. Assuming this one does well enough that there is a future, that is, fingers crossed there. I will say, several of the streamers I've watched in Clans have gravitated to the Nova- you could give them the jumbo version in the Supernova, that thing's got a sportscar of a model.
