Yes, that's exactly what we're talking about - ERMLs versus standard Medium Lasers. ER mediums were added with the first big weapons update, with only the ERLL being in the game before. But my Spider Ace was before that update, so I only had the standard mediums.

Old in the sense of some of the newest stuff. I don't even know if my build works with the quirks. I know one of the Spiders was crazy quirked for ERLLs, and I think for a while there dual ERLL with a slower engine was the recommended build... So hot. So slow. So... meh. (I could be wrong, and it may have always been 1 ERLL and 2 MLs as the older recommended build.)
I really want to get back into this game, but PvP is intimidating to me, and I don't have the time anymore...

Oh, it's doing pretty well, aside from being a niche game with a small player base. =) Balance under the Cauldron is better than it's been in years, or possibly ever. I actually used to get adrenaline shakes when I first started PvP games. I enjoyed them, mind you, but my brain wanted them to be SUPER INTENSE; that faded over time, and now I simply enjoy the focus. Your mind will learn to adjust, and some players are distinctly less intelligent than a bot - don't be daunted! =]
As for quirks, I don't even think we had quirks back then, but it has been a long time. There was a time when a lot of people were using the 5D with two large lasers and a slow engine. I... disliked it. Other 'mechs do that better, and if you're not mobile as a Light, you'd better be bringing more than two Large Lasers to the fight...

Yeah, you're right. I was thinking the quirks didn't come until the first skill tree, but they coexisted with the old "efficiencies" and module system.
The Spider was also my first Light 'mech - I picked the 5D for the ECM so I didn't get chased all around creation every time I was in view, and while it's never been the most powerful Light, it has been fun to drive.
