Sure, low back armor has always been a staple of the game. You keep saying it's only a "skilled player" like that means something. Everyone did it regardless of skill. You can even take a look at old mechlab setups (if they even still exist) people never put just 1 armor in the back. We had debates of that on the forums about how dumb it was dumping 'high' (like over 16ish) armor in the back. But, I think you are confusing low armor with 1 armor. Typically people put like 8-18 (I'm just guessing a range, low but more than the 1-5 you stated), depending on size and what not. nothing much but just enough to take a shot or two before armor was gone. I'm referring specifically evolving into it being set to 1 and that being the staple. It's just funny to see how some of these meta designs have evolved.

In no way did I imply that ony higher skilled players ran low back armour. However I started playing comp in 2014 and division A level exclusively from 2015 and even back then 5 or less back armour was the norm. 10 or more back armour was considered wasteful and something we actively coached new comp players against doing.

I've been seeing 1 back armor recommended for rear arcs literally since I became aware enough to sift the forums and guildmates for recommendations. It's been around for a long time. I generally prefer a little more than that on my heavier chassis, but nobody with any experience in competitive play ever told me to put more than a handful of points, and often just the one, on my rear torsos. It's also true that people would slap 18 points on a brawler Atlas because they expected rear armor damage, but that wasn't the norm for all 'mechs. Even with pre-quirks, 8v8 metas, anyone who paid attention to where their armor was breached would stop putting 18 points in back armor pretty quickly.

Yeah, I don't like running snipers, mostly because they're great at being jumped by light mechs while they're all alone. I have success with this mech as a mid-range build that just punches things in the face. The alpha on it is pretty good.
