Typically people put like 8-18 (I'm just guessing a range, low but more than the 1-5 you stated), depending on size and what not. nothing much but just enough to take a shot or two before armor was gone. I'm referring specifically evolving into it being set to 1 and that being the staple. It's just funny to see how some of these meta designs have evolved.
In no way did I imply that ony higher skilled players ran low back armour. However I started playing comp in 2014 and division A level exclusively from 2015 and even back then 5 or less back armour was the norm. 10 or more back armour was considered wasteful and something we actively coached new comp players against doing.
