I have heard plenty of complaints about it, some players think they're bad, or their build don't work. But the Truth is: Some 'Mechs have great Extra Armor and/or Structure, and some other not, in the same Class or Weight category,. So with this improvement, it's robust for all 'Mechs, no exeptions, no need for any bonuses adding or rebalancing. Of course a bonus could be proper 'coz Cannon Battletech, but wouldn't give a significant advantage, making the game more leveled game XP for everyone.
-but there are players that are bad, and it is very possible to put together bad loadouts. and at then the other side of the coin, even the best mech and the best loadout will worth zip if you are the kind of player that cant play as part of a team and do things like communicate, support teammates in combat, stay together, call targets, etc . but rather wanders on its own walks face first into a full enemy lance...
part of the fun is to grow up beyond those initial obstacles, dude I sucked pretty bad at first, bought mechs and sold them after 1-3 because "sure the mech sucks" but after a while and watching youtubers in action I caught up with stuff...Im still terrible but I can get good awesome matches (those remind me why I play the game still) where Im the last one standing or put down some 6 enemy mechs before going down, I have so many mechs I lost track of which mechs and loadouts work the best for me, hell I ve had good matches out of mechs and loadouts I thought would sucks and I ended up surprising myself.
but honestly dude that change you suggest is too radical, and it will simply lead to a myriad of unforeseeable issues (because nobody can explore alternative realities to see what happens if things go their way...they just can wish for it), and it just doesnt spell "solution"
if your mates were doing their jobs you wouldnt have to worry about a piranha killing you from behind btw... but everybody wants to CoD in here.... also dude just allocate more armor to the back, it only means you have to play smarter from then on, this is one of those issues that has in-game solution see? but of course there is a trade off, there has to be a trade off, otherwise unbalance and exploits get out of hand.
but I do like that people think about this, because honestly I do not like the survival skill tree as it is now. like why dont add a "firepower skill tree" to match the survival skill tree? doesnt that make sense? no? see? opinions!!!
